he mascot was named "Mrs Thomas," in memory of the wildcat mascot who had died two years earlier. When the city ot Abilene learned the college was contemplating a move to another city, citizens raised 356,000 tor a new administration building. The committee then agreed to buy 680 acres ot land tor about S130,000 on the present site. The college also received 510,000 from the will of Mor- gan Jones, a multimillionalre, toward the cost of the new administration building in April, 1927. Cther dona- tions helped toward construction on the new campus. Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Luce and Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Cham- bers ot Dickens County, gave the school productive farmland worth about 535,000 With this money, con- struction began on the academy, named tor the Luces. The dining hall and library building was named tor the Chambers. An auditorium and two dorms were also built within a year. Construction on the new Administra- tion building began on May 23, 1928. During the 1928-29 school year on the old campus, Abilene had a severe water shortage. For two weeks, stu- dents could get water in their dorms only a few hours each day. Baths were at a premium, and water tor drinking had to be stored in the rooms. The boys also fought a bedbug epi- demic in McDonald Hall during this last year. Religion, music, and athletics played a part in the campus lite. Daily chapel and spontaneous devotionals were held. The ACC Glee Club, directed by Myrtle Dunn, received first place hon- ors in statewide competition, and gave ACC excellent publicity. The band also played a big part in the campus life, and in September, 1927, it played a welcome concert at the Abilene Air- field for Charles A. Lindbergh an plane, the Spirit ot St. Louis. ln January, 1929, a tire broke the administration building on th campus. All manent records of the students about halt ot the library books saved by the students. All biolo equipment and some musical in ments were destroyed. Don H. Morris and Burnya Moore were hired to teach pu speaking and home econom respectively, the last year at the campus.
