esse Sewell and his wife Daisy, brought with them 9 the composite of faith, aggressiveness, judgment, and technical skill that made them just right for ACC in the particular period when they took over. ln spite of the rising fame of the school, it was still officially Childer's Classical Institute, and though it was still a preparatory school, it was refer- red to as Abilene Christian College. Concerning the school's co-educa- tional set-up, Bro. Sewell had this to say: "We believe that co-education, under proper restraint, is best for boys and girls." In keeping with Sewell's ideas of "proper restraint," the class- room building was so arranged that boys had to use one set of stairs, girls pl as Histoirtv or Acu l i Jai another. t'The boys and girls meet only in the classrooms, in chapel, and in the literary societies, and this always under supervision of the faculty," the administration decreed. Athletics were encouraged to a moderate degree and Sewell thought boys and girls should be taught that athletics is only a means to an end. "We propose to adopt the rule that no one can participate in athletics who does not do good classwork, and whose deportment is not good," he said. A college bookstore was estab- lished, and it was suggested that the small profits would assist in paying some of the school's expenses. The girls purchased simple uniforms under the direction of lvlrs. Sewell. Parentsof the girls were urged not waste their money on clothes for t girls, as it would do them more har than good. Enrollment had climber from 207 in 1912 to 303 in 1923-24 There was no longer any question o its permanence - only the question o "l-low will we take care of the expan sion that will come?" In the fall of 1919, Batsell Baxte was added to the faculty. His additio as a teacher and the addition o 812,500 of equipment qualified AC as senior college. When Sewel resigned, Baxter became presiden and James F. Cox was selected a dean. ln 1924, with an enrollment of 441, the college had almost outgrown its: facilities. McDonald Hall, a new dorm. for boys, was built in 1924, and a year later, a gymnasium was built. Rules changed as years went by., Formerly students who smoked werei not allowed to receive a degree, but the rules were relaxed and a new pol- icy was issued during the second year of Baxter's administration. Students enrolled for the 1925-26 school year were required to sign a pledge, saying they would not associ- ate with any organization disapproved by the faculty. Students further pledged they would not engage in or encourage a class rush or hazing, and that if they should disregard the
