It Was a Very Good Yea Sounds of. Tiger Tracks Aberdeen High School Aberdeen, Idaho Volume 57, 1974 The Seniors Gratefully Dedicate Their Annual to . . . Mrs. Harder and Mr. Inman We have had fourgreat years. Mrs. Harder and Mr. Inman have helped make them so. Their good humor and cooperation have helped us through many problems and events like homecoming floats and banquets and decorating for dances and getting excused from classes. We want them to know that we appreciate them. Mrs. Harder has been an exceptionally good advisor of our class all four years. This is Mr. Inman's last year before he retires and we want to say Good luck. Lefty, and good hunting. Each one of us fellows knows he'll always be Skipper to you, and every girl will always be Young GaL 2 Sounds of. . . . . . Enjoyment . Sadie Hawkins Straw, corn, and more straw was the setting for the Soph, -sponsored Sadie Hawkins dance. Ernest Land- vatter and Tammy Carnahan were voted Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae. Mr. and Mrs. Stults (alias Marryin' Sam and Sadie) were busy perform- ing marriage ceremonies wnile Cass Nichols cleaned out the pie eating contest in 7.20 seconds. (He had a tough pie tin.) Harvest Ball As autumn came around with her harvest, so did the Future Farmers of America come around with a successful, traditional Harvest Ball dance. After a week of voting by pennies, nickles, and dimes, Jr. candidate, Sarah Toevs totaled up to be the new Chapter Sweet- heart. Other candidates were Debbie Fehringer (Sr.), Tammy Carnahan (Soph.), and Barbara Thomas (Frosh.). Music was furnished by the ARS Nova. Sounds of. . . . . . harmony . . . insanity . . . command . . . silence . . . hysteria . . . Rowe -V . . . munching and crunching 7 ez, 6ujiuooeiuo|_) The Mighty Tigers went a prowler and brought home spirit, pride, victory, and Cardinal feathers and dedicated their accomplishments to their Homecoming Royalties. Frogs jumped, players leaped, cheerleaders flipped, the seniors' golden calf flopped, school spirit rose, and the Tigers overall (as the Tigers are) reached great heights during homecoming week. Thursday the Tigers ran through the streets cursing Cardinals and prophesying of Tiger victory. Then they cremated their opponents' mascot in the traditional bonfire. Friday floats paraded and Thursday's prophesies were fulfilled by a 21-12 Tiger victory. At Saturday's Homecoming dance, out- standing-player-award honors were bestowed upon two mighty Tigers, Glen Muirbrook and Rod Mitchell. The dance reached its climax as the Queens and Attendants were crowned. Valerie Christiansen and Christy Johnson tied for Queen and shared the honor. Jan Wahlen was junior attendant; Sudney Hoagland - Soph.; and Barbara Thomas - Frosh. The theme song If' was played and sung by Kerry Poulson and Marie Duffin. Summing it up, Homecoming 1973 was truly a week of happiness, togetherness, and success for Aberdeen High. 12 Powder Puff Women's Lib in Full Force! While the Junior and Senior girls took off make-up, stockings, and frilly dresses, and put on battle pads and helmets, a few male cheerleaders were doing a little liberating of their own. After a hot fight on the battle-grounds, the Mighty Seniors beat the no- more-Jolly Juniors all to heck! (30-2) Man of La Mancha the sound of an impossible dream come true An outstanding event of this or any other year was the Music Department's production of MAN OF LA MANCHA. Directed by David Quistad and ac- companied by a 16-piece orchestra and Kathy Davidson at the piano, the two-night event broke all attendance records. Richard Adams sang the title role, with tremendous companion performances by Susan Nelson, Layton Anderson, Monte Pierce, John Bollwinkel, Melanie Pratt, Diane Farnsworth, Vickie Westover, Marie Duffin, Vicki Larsen, Diane Adams, and many others, all excellent. Orchestra members were: Cheryl Isaak, Jocelyn Wallace, Chris- tine Johnson, Denise Davidson, Jan Vollmer, Krys Kendell, Vic- ki Tieszen, Don Klempel, Arlynn Hammond, JD Hiebert, Tim Satterfield, Russell Klempel, David Wedel, Virginia Larsen, Janie 1 George, and Brett Gonzales. Where did all the good-looking and talented girls come from? Is this what AHS is producing? Just a few of the questions asked by the awe-stricken audience who attended the Jr. Miss pageant and watched twelve lovely girls do their things. This year the twelve girls who vied for the title of Jr. Miss were Sheri Poulson, Bettilee McPeek, Elaine Hiebert, Debbie Fehringer, Janiel George, Corinne Taylor, Debbie Thompson, Jocelyn Wallace, Karen Bartholoma, Kathy Davidson, Pam Hurd, and Valerie Christiansen. Eachdid anoutstanding job and all were winners in the eyes of their judges. Debbie Fehringer was named Aberdeen’s Jr. Miss, as well as Poise and Appearance and Youth Fitness winner. Corinne Taylor was 1st runner up. Kathy Davidson received 2nd runner up, as well as Scholastic and Creative and Performing Arts awards. Karen Bartholoma was voted by the girls as spirit of Jr. Miss. A special thanks and appreci- ation were extended to the Aberdeen JayCees who sponsored and made this event possible. The Mets’ winter work-out. Corinne can't believe it. Step up to the bar. The library staff under the direction of Mrs. Huls includes Marcia Klassen, Martha Klassen, Sheri Sainz, Renee Oman, Corinne Taylor, Christy Johnson, Elaine Hiebert and, above it all, Diane Farnsworth. Elec- trically charged personalities of the communications staff are Mark Wheeler, Ralph Powell, Doug Marley, Don Klempel, Robert Wynn, Keith Lords, John Shipley, John Bollwinkel, Stan- ley Jones and their mentor, Mr. Mac. Mr. Rowe's debators form a friendly half-circle of affirmatives and negatives. 31 Soils judging team - 2nd in State Crops judging team - 1st in District Aberdeen’s F.F.A. continued its tradition of being best. For the fourth consecutive year it won the District Sweepstakes, and won many firsts at state compeition. Monte Pierce is district president. Chapter officers are Richard Adams, David Woods, David Maisch, Todd Feld, Terry Krehbiel, and Neil O'Brien. Veril Nelson, advisor. Annual Staff Without the talented, bright, and original ideas of the annual staff and the inspired leadership of Mrs. Wride, there would be no annual. The annual staff has spent long hours taking pictures and arrang- ing and designing this book to capture many of the choice memories and highlights of the school year A special thanks is wished to all those who put forth their time and efforts to help make the annual a success. We're Shooting for a Great Annual! Mrs. Wride, Advisor Susan Edwards, Asst. Ed. Willing to sing their hearts out, are the A.H.S. choir under the direction of Dave Quistad The choir has pre- sented several concerts for the public during the year as well as the Musical Man of La Mancha which turned out to be a great success. Aber- deen was host to the District Music Festival April 5 and 6. The maestro himself! Ai ai ai! Such harmony produced from these rusty throats! 37 Band Can you play ’Blah? How so few can raise so large a sound . . . 38 Band instruments in the hands of high school musicians. This is another important part of the music department, also under the direction of Dave Quistad. The band also presented concerts and Man of La Mancha in con- junction with the choir. From the band also comes the Pep Band which makes spirit a whole lot peppier during the games. Drill Team We've got legs,” is not an understatement when the drill team girls come on the floor to do their thing. The hard work and early-morning practicing proved to be worthwhile for the drill team as they executed their routines with perfection during half time at the games. The Tigerettes are a great complement to the Tigers and a source of pride to us all. A year to remember - and we really hope that we have done a good job of helping you to keep the memories of its sounds - its laughter, its screams, its groans, its sighs. Do you remember Homecoming and the seniors' sacred cow - with orange and black stripes on it? And the deep carpet of straw that we danced on (in?) at Sadie Hawkins? The littler kids got lost in it and weren't found until the next day. Do you remember that it was this year that we got the new auto- mechanics shop to replace the one built by Lewis and Clark? And do you remember the early morning drill team practices? How come the gym was always 125 degrees in the shade the night of a game and -14 degrees the next morning when we practiced in it? And speaking of the gym - do you remember the hysteria that took over when we won our first league game with that last-second basket, and every- one did double cartwheels twenty feet off the floor? It was a VERY good year! It was the year of Bill Knudsen’s Vagabond Lover and Francisco's spirit juice - of Glen Muirbrook's punctuality and Neil O’Brien’s regular attendance. It was the year that Karen straightened Mr. Brown’s teeth, and Mrs. Huls furnished Karl with a barf-bag for the library. It was the year of double-good. We had two Homecoming Queens, two most-valuable players, and we even dedicated the annual to two favorites instead of one. (And don't forget that the senior girls won TWO years in Powder Puff!) It was the year that Mr. Rowe and Mr. Petersen finally admitted that they were nice guys, and the year of Mrs. Chandler's black eye. It was the year of daylight-saving time that saved night time, and the year of the last spud vacation. (Oh! sorrow!) And the most important man in school for months was the Man of La Mancha. And through it all we had our problems, just like Nixon and his Watergate: pictures that didn't turn out just when we had a deadline to meet - the senior pages that had to be done over completely because of a little mistake on the first one. And WHY do the same people have to be absent EVERY time the photographer is here for class pictures? As you can see, it has left us looking faded and old and our room in a mess. But - IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR. With love from Debbie and Susan John B. Mary Jane Cecelia Jocelyn P. Rhonda S. Cindy T. Jan W. Monte Linda F. Marie Terri S. Vicki L. Sam Jan L. P.S. Remember, there is a 12-page supplement yet to come! 88
