2 The Tiger is a large, graceful, brightly colored jungle cat of Aberdeen. Men who know both the lion, or any other mascot, say that the Tiger is the most powerful. To this fierce, beautiful mascot we dedicate the 1972 annual. For fifty-five years the Tiger has been the mascot of Aberdeen High School. The symbol of our strength and spirit, the Tiger led us to many, many victories at all levels of competition. In this year of the Tiger, A.H.S. has excelled in all activities. The history of the Alumni takes us back to the early settlement of Aberdeen. As the pioneers realized the importance of education for their children, they soon established places for training, and eligible teachers were provided to instruct the pupils. One place that brings back many fond memories to the Alumni is the Old Tabernacle , a tent used as a school house. The tent had a board floor, which was very inconvenient because of the cracks between the boards being nearly one-half of an inch wide. These formed the handiest receptacle for pens and pencils, and furnished much amusement for the scholars. As the demands and requirements increased with the ever growing generation, larger and better schools were necessary. In consideration therof, the construction of our present Elementary building took place; being com- pleted in 1913. The new school building supplied room for a high school and the eight preceding grades. In 1913, our high school was composed of a freshman and sophomore class. They may be called the true founders of pep and enthusiasm that has ever been manifested in our school, because they established most of our traditions The year 1917 brought with it the first graduating class, which had an enrollment of four members. Professor W.E. Davidson was superintendant during this time. He took up his responsibilities at the end of the first semester in 1917. The high school developed a good athletic team in spite of the small enrollment. In the spring of 1919, Aberdeen developed a basket ball team that won the Southeastern Idaho championship, The team went to Moscow to the state tournament but was defeated. The 1918 team, a year before, was defeated in the last game of the South Eastern Idaho tourney by Sugar City, due to an unaccustomed slick floor. Under the supervision of James Hurt, our first high school band was organized in 1919. The band proved to be a decided success, and continued under the leadership of Peyton Hurt and Wallace Clinger, respectively for a number of years. After a few years of the Smith-Hughes system, which proved to be the crowning of a complete and splendid curriculm for those who desire an elementary education, was instituted in our high school. The years sped by, and the enrollment grew larger each term. Our present school building had proven itself too small to accommodate all the students enrolled. On this account new buildings were purchased, the same being used as class rooms for the lower grades and agriculture classes. Aberdeen was awarded first honors at the county fair in 1921. Mr. C.M. Sly, our agriculture instructor, was in charge of the Aberdeen booth. The agriculture classes prepared most of the exhibits, which proved the general efficiency of our institution. School attraction was increased with the purchase of a piano, which enabled the high school to practice singing. This encouraged literary work and developed latent talents which were great benefit to all students. Chapel exercises were soon instituted for the moral and spiritual training of the students. The ministers of the various churches have delivered their addresses successively every week. Dire need of a football, baseball, track and general play ground was felt; therefore five acres of land near the school grounds were purchased for the purpose. 92 The school owes much of its success to the Board of Education , whose work has benefitted us in numerous ways.
