HOPPER 7- sujer X 4 1 PRESIDEN T LEON HENDERSON TIME: . PLACE: SCENE: Midnight in the year 2050 . . . Aberdeen,Idaho A grave yard As the shadows lall four ghostly figures silently descend from their graves. It is so deadly quiet one could hear a body drop. As the figures become more visible the faces of Zelma Peck, Dorene Holt, Jean Holt, and Barbara Line can be recognized in the gloom. Listen you can hear them speaking. Let’s draw closer and eavesdrop. Why, here’s our Ghostly Ghost reporter. Any noose tonight, Barbara? Why, yes, I’ve just finished gathering statistics about our class of ’50. Would you like to hear? First on my list is Leon Adamson. I still can see him in his dirty cove rails, wandering through the halls of A. H. S. Did you know he became manager of Hill Field? Too bad how he died,...I heard he “Danced himself to death. Next is Ronald Bowman. We always knew our class- mates would make good. He became the President of the Y.M.C.A. But it’s not what you think. He belongs to the Yodeling Men Who Came from Aberdeen. Do you remember that girl .in our class who won an art contest in a magazine during our Junior year? Why who else could it be than Luella Peck? In later years she took over the studio of Walt Disney’s creations in Hollywood, and added many more char- acters to the collection. Did you hear about the latest of our classmates who is joining us? It is Elaine Black- burn. She decided she had better die, because she had accomplished about everything in life, and it would be rather boring to live in a dull old world. By the way do you know who buried her? None other than Parrish, Parrish and Henderson. They have gone into the undertaking business. I'm not surprised though, they were always undertaking something in school. I hear that the business is quite large and that their sons have taken over to keep the business “alive . And then there was Velene Brookbush. Her millionaire husband just died. That’s the fifth one that’s died of a broken heart. When she died she left all her money to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Women. 1 wonder what her reason was. Bob Burgemeister is next on my list. As I understand it he was one of the first ones to die. He received an injury just a few days before we graduated.lt seems that in one of our quarrels with the School Board, about our sneak, he happened to get in the way of one of the “flying issues and it hit him in the head. He never fully recovered from the effects. There was another one of the Auto Mechanics boys. Cal Dance, you know the one who always sat on the front row in English IV. Well, he got so used to it that after he graduated, he took a course, and replaced Mrs. Arms after she retired. Verl was our little genius, but he had one weakness, chewing gum in English. He made up for all the gum he de- posited in the waste paper basket, by becoming manager and owner of the Hawes Gum Corporation, specializing in double bubble gum. He stuck right to it until he died. Roy Bridenstine really used to be brilliant in school, when he wanted to be. Remember Einstein? Roy took over in his place, when one of Einstein’s experiments backfired.Rex- took over his father’s farm, and produced the renowned 3 foot potatoes, which became the eighth wonder of the world. Also Rex’s old classmate, Willis, became noted the world over for his basketball playing and coaching. Willis’ team took the Olympics for ten straight years. Speaking of sports can’t you remember the nations most famous Sports Writers? They were Dorothy and Margaret Nugent and Leola Turner, our own class mates. Little Floraine Hess also became famous, after she graduated, as a member of the Barnum and Bailey Circus. Her partner on the flying trapeze later became her husband. I guess he swept her off her feet. Oh, yes and then there was Maurice King. He was really little, but quite suddenly he began to grow, and became much taller than anyone else. I suppose he felt rather conspic- uous in America, for he moved to a small island in the Pacific and the last 1 heard of him he had lived up to his name by being crowned King of the island. 42 Vic Ransom has surely made a place for himself. We didn’t know it then, but a talent scout was present the night of our Junior Play, and when he spotted Vic, he knew he was material for Hollywood. Vic has been called the “Van Johnson of the Potato Field . I’ve been looking for Gloria’s grave here, but I suppose she was buried in Moscow. I guess after she and Howard were married, they attached somuch sentiment to the place that they wanted to stay. Betty Neuman is here. She has her piano buried with her. 1 don’t blame her either, since Jose Iturbi gave it to her. And how could any one forget mild tempered little Ethel Pierce of our class. I hear before she died she was voted the lovliest great great grandmother in our nation. She always was such a “Swede little old lady. Well, here’s Kay. I don’t suppose you could guess who she married. She and Keith had a very happy life together. They spent most of their lives on a farm in Twin Falls. Their 10 sons took over after they died. I guess women have really taken their place in world politics. You know, Joyce Isaak finally became personal advisor to the President of the United States. That is, during Robert Perman’s administration. Why here is Revella’s grave. How could we ever forget her southern drawl? I guess her part in the Senior Play as Miss Phipps, really got hold of her, and she devoted her life to writing about Germs and their Habits. She died young though, for while she was look- ing through her microscope, a loose pity-ross-foromo-balli germ scared her to death. Remember Merle V. our Tenor? Ah, the ladies really went for Merle. 1 heard that in later years he sang with Kathryn Grayson’s daughter in the Metropolitan. Too bad how he died, the strain was too much for him, I guess, and he broke a blood vessel while singing “Carmen . Well, here is Stanley Lehman. Remember how interested in big business he was in Miss Giesbrecht’s history class? Well.it didn't take him long to reach the top. lie became the head of the l.W.W. Their slogan was “I Won't Work. His wife kept after him to go back to the soil, but he never did. That is not till the day he died. I remember Margene Parsons as having that beautiful long red hair. 1 suppose she became very wealthy, as she styled the hair of most of America’s well dressed women. Dale Nelson always was having a Toni. It seems he got tired of having his hair done every few weeks, so he experimented and the results were his famous Daley Curl. Wayne Phillips took up Commercial Art in Chicago. His painting“Potato Boy is in the Stanford Museum in California. Remember how Grace Ruff always wanted to be a stenographer? She married the boss in her business firm, and things rolled along pretty smoothly. Gary Hurd was our star football player in high school. He followed up his ambition and became the star player on the Notre Dame team. What a man! But he finally kicked a bucket instead of a football. Roberta Kennedy became a Powers model and a cover girl. She also took the Miss America award in 1960. Her husband squoze her to death. Homer Smith liked our English IV Literature so much that he went to the English Lake District, where so many English authors have gone. The Silliad and the Oddesyby Homer are known all over the world. Shirley Shackelford moved to Seattle where she intended to become a Commercial artist, but married instead. They live on the coast and travelintheir Yacht to Alaska where they own a large cannery. Elaine Parsons lived a very happy life in Florida, but strange as it seems, she died of Seasickness. I wonder why. Well, here’s my advice to those who have not yet joined us. “If your heart is broken, and you’ve crashed against the rocks. You might be over a barrel, but be glad you’re not in a box. That’s all the news for tonight. Say! What is that startling edifice over there? O that’s our tomb stone. It’s one of the Holt Cousins original. We designed it ourselves. And, Zelma, how did you die?Oh, I must have been pretty hard to get along with---an “Adams finally killed me. Oh well, I don’t have to wash dishes now. By the way. Barb, when did you die? Oh I died when the annual came out. 1 guess I’d better be shoveling off. As the first rays of dawn slowly creep through the gnarled branches of the old oak tree the four figures bid adieu, and rattle back to their lonely tombs. All is hushed in the grave The Last Will and Testament of the Class of 1950 of the City of Aberdeen, County of Bingham, State of Idaho, of the United States of America, North- ern Hemisphere, world, known universe, made and published on this day of February 27 in the Year of Our Lord, One Thousand Nine Hundred and Fifty.
