BOYS' ATHLETICS . 4
A successful season was enjoyed by all participating in boys' sports during the past year. As a result of two,
consecutive years of playing together the football team attained a high degree of team work, and thus fought its
way to a successful season of four wins, one tie, and a loss victory. Credit may be laid at the feet of captain Paul' A
Hersch for his cooperative spirit and athletic ability. Q I
The two basketball teams differed a trifle in their ups and downs. The light weights, captained by- Steve
Koch, gathered the laurels for victories amounting to 15 and lost but 1. Under the capable guidance of Clarence
Nicholson, the heavies lost eight games, but found solace in eight well earned wins.
During the year the tumbling team offered several exhibitions of its skill as entertainment on different programs.
The team found a true leader in Doc Miller.
On the twenty-fifth of Ianuary the boys combined their skills to produce a program to replenish the always
depleted athletic resources. The show was voted a success from both an entertainment and financial stand point.
Other activities were also sponsored, among which was a home room basketball tournament in the fall, an
intramural basketball contest during the winter, a boxing tournament and basketball tournament in the spring,
and a home room baseball tournament. A good time was had by all.
Abbott should have a strong baseball team for this spring's games, for the boys lost only one game during the

GIRLS' ATHLETICS '
During the school year of 1933-34 the girls of Abbott have been very busy in the activities of the Physical 4
Education Department. The program has been an all around one in which every girl has had an opportunity to
do in athletics that which she liked best, and also to train in the other sports. Along with gymnastics, folk dancing, st 'D
and ballroom dancing, there have been basketball teams, hockey teams, tumbling teams, a horseshoe tournament, K'
volley ball, and baseball. - 4
In the fall the hockey team was organized with Louise Miller as captain. The practices were held at Maroon 'J Q
Field. Although no real games were played teams of Abbott and Elgin High School girls played together several
Near the end of the first semester basketball teams were organized in the Five classes, 10B, 9A, 9B, 8A and 8B.
The captains were Iean Graham, Dorothy Larson, Hazel Lind, Sylvia Vary, and Dorothy Stanek, respectively. 1
During the last part of the first semester the Abbott girls were hostesses to several of the freshman and
sophomore girls' basketball teams. The teams were mixed, and several games were played.
The tumbling team, captained by Collette Beal, worked up a very original and entertaining program. The
program was comprised of individual stunts, stunts with two girls, and stunts with the full team of twelve.
These feats were all done to music. The team presented this program before the P. T. A. and at an auditorium
program. At the P. T. A. meeting folk dances were also given.
