Sports at The beginning of an Abbot girl ' s first experiences in the Athletic world is the famous Abbot initia- tion, where she is tagged either a Gargoyle or a Griffin. It is an ex- citing moment when one takes the pledge of loyalty to her team; and from then on she is aware of the Gargoyles and Griffins around her, and the fine athletic spirit that sur- rounds her in her everyday life at Abbot. For fall sports we were given the choice of being a basket- ball star, or mavbe a tennis star or a hockey pro. We were just getting into the swing of the fall season when along came winter, offering us such sports as skiing. [58]

Those on the teams practised daily for all the games. Girls who were not on teams made their contribution by taking walks, and cheering the team on to victory. Much can be V said of the wonderful team spirit which urged the Griffins to their share of the victories at the Fall and Spring field days and especial- ly at the gym meet. Finally a great part of the success of the year ' s Griffin team can be attributed to the wonderful leadership of the team captain, Molly; the team song leader, Lloyd, and of course to its able mascot, Gus! a Glance skating, modern dance and gym. Also repeated from last year was fencing, a sport that fascinates all. However, the skiing was really the most fun because of the quantity of snow this vear. With occasional broken bones however, it was an exciting winter season. Then spring fever settled in the hearts of all and we raced from third base to home, trotted down the la crosse field and swatted that lovelv serve over the net, much to our surprise. Taking our last walk and receiving our final awards at last chapel with the award of the shield we ended our athletic vear of nineteen hundred and fiftv-two. [59]
