Year of Sports When you became a student of Abbot Academy vou became a member of her Athletic Associa- tion, and belonging to this society has meant a great deal to you. It was not so very long ago, and you ' ll never forget that day, for vour face was white as vou marched out of the tower door to your expected doom. It was then that vou were initiated onto one of Abbot ' s teams — the Gargoyles or the Griffins. And when you received the orange or the green, there was a look of pride in your eyes! You knew the good times ahead! You were really a part of Abbot then, and your sportsmanship and spirits soared high. Lister and Gus looked at you all and whispered to each other, " Never have the teams been so finer ' And so your life here began, with you very much a part of Abbot and Abbot a part of you. All through the fall months you were out there plugging away — Whew! You were exhausted from GRIFFIN BASKETBALL TEAM R. Reifsnyder, J. Pope, G. Y ' offa, C., E. Moss, Captain; M. Teasdale, M. Ariz, C. Corey playing that hockey game! Or maybe there was a " basketball finger " to remind you of the rip- roaring competition the other team offered. And pounds literally fell off on the tennis court as vou struggled to win your tournament. Then, when the big day arrived and the orange and green became reallv friendlv enemies, vou all GARGOYLE HOCKEY TEAM T. Dithmer, .1 . Beard, G. Dams, E. Chaplin, J. Holt, C. lluberth, M. " A " Society j The " A " Society is composed of the girls who have gained 500 per- sonal athletic points. Points may be gotten in a number of ways; by making a varsity team (oh! those athletes!), taking those well- loved " bird-walks " (Salem Street, here we come), by standing up straight, whenever Miss Judd or TEAM CAPTAINS Mickey, Gargoyles; Peggy, Griffins Miss Elroy wander in, by pass- ing those wicked tests each season ; and last but not least, bv the ath- letic citation. One can also win class numerals which are proudly worn on blazers by gaining 300 points; and the most sought-after award comes after 750 points, the Abbot blazer. This last award goes to the girls who have steadily participated in all the athletics and AAA " Janie " have shown outstanding work in athletics and, incidentally, who are worshipfully admired by those less athletic ones. But whether one gets a set of numerals or a blazer, every one is a loval member of the Athletic Association and together strive to uphold the standards created and carried on from vear to vear. " You all played and yelled profes- sional that dav, and Lister and Gus were proud as Punch. The fall season ended and the GARGOYLE BASKETBALL TEAM Left to right: A. Emmert, A . Penwell, T. Wood, T. Some of you slipped into slinky leotards and flitted off to modern dance while others be- gan to climb the walls and twist themselves up in knots — you guessed it — gymnastics. Hail Miss Judd and Miss Elroy for keeping their eardrums in shape. (We do apologize for sounding like ele- phants, but we did mean well.) When that first snow arrived you donned your glamorous ski clothes, put on the brand-new pair of skis and felt terribly professional. Bang! Crash! Better luck next time down. It takes a few to get in practice. But what fun vou had when you could reallv ski — vou know, make it down vertically and land at the bottom in the same position. Or mavbe ice-skating was vour special sport. Many a happy hour was spent skimming over the shiny [61]
