Dramatics Tryouts; Miss Hale ' s scribbled notices; rehearsals; playbooks dog-eared from study; rehearsals; butterflies; curtain time. Yes, " The play ' s the thing. " December brought the seniors ' presen- tation of Fanny and the Servant Problem. Never shall we forget the dashing picture of Fanny and her lover, or the Bennett family ' s rendition of " Soldiers of Christ Arise " as it echoed and re-echoed through Bantock Hall. From the enthusiastic cheers of the underclassmen, the seniors knew their comedy had been a success. The Abbot Dramatic Society includes some of the more talented actresses of the school. The membership, on a competitive basis, was increased from ten to sixteen this year, so that more girls might share its opportunities. Another new feature was the holding of monthly meetings, the purpose of which was to give the members a wider knowledge of the theatre. The climax of the year ' s work came in April when A.D.S. put on Dear Brutus, the NORA AND PEGGY " Lady and Lord Bantock " well-beloved play of James Barrie. With Sonny ' s battle cry, " Let ' s clear the stage, " school girls adopted varied and complex characters. After these two entertaining plays, Abbot turned her eyes towards Draper Dramatics, the play which would high- light the graduation activities. A. D. S. Back Row, left to right: M. Whittall, R. Miss Friskin, Directress Choir The Abbot Chapel Choir, a group of about sixteen voices, for the most part Seniors, sings each Sunday at vespers. Under the direction of Miss Kate Friskin, we aspire to master the difficult passages in many of the classical four-part an- thems. It is work, and fun, and we love it. Fidelio Early in the fall, the lucky chosen fifty hurry to the first meeting of Fidelio. The program would include a concert at Abbot with the Exeter boys as our sing- ing guests, and then another at Governor Dummer where we would be the visitors. Both events meant dinner parties before and dancing after the programs. AVe would also sing a vesper service in the Phillips Academy chapel with the choir. Under the baton of our gifted director, Miss Kate Friskin, we worked out of the flats into some too sharps until we finally became natural, or so we hoped, especially on the big occasion. Fidelio enriches our years at Abbot, for as underclassmen we listen to the beauti- ful choral concerts, and as upperclassmen we take pride in either achieving mem- bership, or else seeing our classmates participate in the traditional success of this time-honored organization. |0W ISTHE TIME! .. H 1 1 Courant We don ' t see our names in lights, but we do see them in print! Of course, not only our names appear in print, but our literary aspira- tions as well, and these, in their final presentation, make up Cour- ant. Courant is the school maga- zine, open to all for contributions, but assembled and organized by the board which consists of ten members of the two upper classes. Mandy ' s " Courant, 4:45! " an- nounces our weekly meetings where new material is read, criticized and, if it passes the " thumbs-up " test, it is on its way. Twice a year our meetings are tinged with an especially animated atmosphere as they include frantic typing of material, chiseling block-cuts, pro- ducing an artistic frontispiece, and never-ending proofreading, all done for the goal— " ready for press. " When Courant actually is ready for press, we hand it over to the printer, and after passing judg- ment on the galley and page proof, Courant again appears — Now a bound, complete magazine!
