A. C. A. Together with the efforts of the World Student Service Fund, A.C.A. has contributed to many charities to aid in the fight against suffering. A.C.A. began the year with a lively Old Girl-New Girl party, with games, stunts, refreshments and new friends for everyone. During the fall many of us experienced " second-childhood " while dressing dolls and choosing toys to send to the Hindman Settlement. Saint Nick stopped here at the party A.C.A. gave for Andover children, with presents for each little boy and girl. The Preps and Juniors gave The Birds ' Christmas Carol, and to the tune of " Jingle Bells " the party came to a happy end. A basket of fruit was presented to the Andover Old Folks ' Home for their Christmas. The candle- light Vesper Service, with the reading of two stories, was a delightful part of A.C.A. OFFICERS B. Davis, A. Merriwether, A. Russell, B. Flather, P. Barry Student Government at Abbot is not abstract and withdrawn from the stu- dent body. On the contrary, from the time a girl enters Abbot until her graduation Stu-G plays an important part in her life. It may be that her contact with it is only in an official capacity, and she may be conscious of the officers as the girls who remind her of the rules that must be obeyed. However, the sense of fair play, sports- manship and honor achieved under Student Government has an indescrib- able effect on the future life of every Abbot girl. The work of the 1949-1950 council included alteration of the citation system, and sponsorship of correspondences between Abbot and young people of other countries. On November 5-6, 1949, representatives of the New England Student Government Association met in Andover. The work of the council regulates and sets a high standard for Abbot students. [50]

Miss Friskin, Directress Choir The Abbot Chapel Choir, a group of about sixteen voices, for the most part Seniors, sings each Sunday at vespers. Under the direction of Miss Kate Friskin, we aspire to master the difficult passages in many of the classical four-part an- thems. It is work, and fun, and we love it. Fidelio Early in the fall, the lucky chosen fifty hurry to the first meeting of Fidelio. The program would include a concert at Abbot with the Exeter boys as our sing- ing guests, and then another at Governor Dummer where we would be the visitors. Both events meant dinner parties before and dancing after the programs. AVe would also sing a vesper service in the Phillips Academy chapel with the choir. Under the baton of our gifted director, Miss Kate Friskin, we worked out of the flats into some too sharps until we finally became natural, or so we hoped, especially on the big occasion. Fidelio enriches our years at Abbot, for as underclassmen we listen to the beauti- ful choral concerts, and as upperclassmen we take pride in either achieving mem- bership, or else seeing our classmates participate in the traditional success of this time-honored organization. FIDELIO [52]
