The Abbot Circle 938 ( Laa cz7ji±.toxu Long years ago we entered Through the Abbot Gate To gain some further knowledge To face our future fate. We gazed in wide-eyed wonder At mighty Seniors tall, We meekly opened doors And hardly spoke at all. The next year we were Juniors, All full of confidence; With grammar grim we struggled We learned to ride and fence. As Junior-Mids we battled With Caesar and the Gauls; And much to our amazement, Had Friday evening calls! Returning the next autumn We found Miss Hearsey here, Whose smile was inspiration; Who helped us through the year. Our plays, so long-awaited, Were given with success; And then our yellow sweaters Which we liked — more or less! Soon came the prom and tea dance, Oh! thou dear heart, be still. And then our own class picnic And bonfire on Pomps hill. Too soon, alas, ' twas our turn To be the Seniors tall; We got our longed-for parlor — Our porch — and that ' s not all! To Intervale we ' ve been now; To Boston for the day; We ' ve eaten at Baronial, And had our Senior Play. Oh moment full of triumph When each received her ring! What memories of Abbot To her mind will it bring? And now at last Commencement — For larger lives we yearn, And leave behind us school days That never will return. As Abbot we are leaving We sigh for what is past; For deepest pleasure is the theme Of days that went too fast. 48

Our Alma Mater soon we ' ll leave In different groups we ' ll be, A memory chest we ' ll keep in mind, A ring will be the key. This little ring with letters two Inscribed thereon in gold — What retrospective happiness This little ring will hold! — Elise Duncan _7t££ c ona From this familiar earth we Seniors lift a clod, And here with reverent hands plant deep within the sod A slender, silver birch tree, symbolic of the ties Which we have made at Abbot, here, beneath New England skies. Its roots, entwined, will firmly fold a memory in each heart, That never will be broken — though we are far apart. It stands exposed to winter ' s storms and summer ' s gentle rain, Its golden leaves will drift in fall, but come back once again With glorious approach of spring and, blooming, thrive anew, So leaving now we plant this birch, — our loyal love for you. — Jeanne Sawyer 47
