Coach, Connolly, Ricketson, Kane, Wight, Kendall, Wood, Wain, Coach Ed Korisky, Mgr. O'Neill FOOTBALL The 1947 Abbey football team will long be remembered by the students. Aside from the due credit deserved by the players a great deal of credit belongs to our coaches, Edward Chopperv Korisky, former Bulkeley High and Villanova University star, and assistant coach Tom Howard. Opening their schedule on Friday, October 18, Abbey encountered powerful Admiral Billard at New London. The game was played under lights. The Billard team had played three games, whereas the green and white was untested. However, Abbey came through by winning, 13-6. ln their next contest the Green and White played East Haven at the latter's field in another night ame. Simeone was lost to the team because of an injury received in the Billard game, but the loss was strengthened by the addition of two stellar performers, Bill Pieper, West Hartford Star and Fran Nicoletti, an all-state center, from Bristol High. Abbey once again won, this time 19-6. Standouts were Kaesmann, Barry, Pi er, and Head. On October 31, 1947, Abbey started up against their big test, the Wesleyan V.'s at Middletown. The Green and VVhite went into the game the decided underdogs. In this contest the scoring was done wholly on long runs. Abbey Won with a smashing score of 20-O. Standouts in this game were the seven Shafts of Steel composed of P. Nicoletti, Connolly, Allen, Santorso, Dunphy, Kaesmann, and Gilhooly, F. Nicoletti and Murphy. With three games now in the victory column, the Abbey eleven finally met defeat as they played a big Arnold College I. Vfs team at Milford, losing by a score of 12-0. Abbeyis next scheduled game was with Marianapolis Academy of Thompson, Conn., one of the strongest prep school arrays in the country. The Thompson team proved too much as the Abbey team got off to a shaky start, and lost 24-7. As customarily done, Coach Korisky did not elect captains at the start of the season, but chose game captains before each game, a method that worked very well. In a post- season election of honorary team co-captains, Bill Pieper and Bill Dunphy were elected. This Abbey array can be stamped as one of the outstanding teams in our sports history. VVC are proud of their record, their determination and their sportsmanship.
