A streak of sllver IS outlined against the sky A plane clrcllng A l-I S s alrport IS at
temptlng to land Its nearness reveals the Wfltlllg on thls glant shlp The Splrlt of Edu
CdtlOh and printed just below in bold faced type IS The Hlgher We Cllmb The Broad
er The Vlew We have watched the course of this plane for eleven successlve years and
have walted eagerly lts bon voyage Now It is our prlvllege as class hlstorlans to re
late some of the highlights of thls momentous journey
Eleven years ago fifty eager passengers clutching tightly lunch palls and tablets en
tered this plane The Spirit of Education youngsters not old enough to see the dan
ger of belng oppressed for llfe by lgnorance yet old enough at heart to want to become
part of this school of learning
Our enemies this flrst year were nurnerous Egotlsm was our greatest foe We had to
learn the lesson of discipllne the lesson of glve and take Our pilot MISS Odessa
Wootten was very patlent with us shy and insecure youngsters She dld a remarkable job
in helplng us over the flrst air pocket of our journey
The second part of our journey involved the major task of learnlng to form study hlblts
Campbell Thls part of our journey merits a highlight slnce we moved into the new build
lng On thls stop of the plane new faces were added to our llst of passengers and some
farnlllar faces were dropped from the list
Our pllot for the fourth fifth and sixth journeys were Miss Mary Evelyn Warren Mrs
Marlon Tucker, and Mrs Louis Vickers Each cbntrlbuted her share towards dlrectlng
our course ln the path of our beacon light the standards and ldeals of A H S
Mrs Renfroe was our pilot for the seventh lap of our journey Thls marked another
highlight of our trip for we received certificates for seven years of strenuous flylng We
had many pre test flights to make Honors were glven to joyce Danlels and joe Ann Dlx
The eighth part of our journey found us on a new course our High School Career
Our pllots were Mr and Mrs Bell Mrs Burkett Mrs Murray Mrs McKle, Mr DIX
Mrs Carswell and Mr and Mrs Smith
During our four years of high school flying many hazards which befall a plane trlp
came our way One tremendous alr pocket almost caused a crash landlng a chemlstry
However not all of the sailing was rough and hazardous for some very happy hours can
be recalled We engaged in various school events school banquets, picnics hikes etc
Our part in the athletic program was outstanding Our class was represented ln the DIS
trict Meet in home economics, typing quartet trio essay and one act play and I might
add that we took honors in several of the above mentioned events We engaged ln several
money making projects ice cream business, selling candy etc
Our tenth year held three outstanding highlights We started our school paper fa paper
that has grown and now merits recognition with other leading school papers, We recelved
our class rings and the junior Senior Banquet A Nlght at the Royal Palm was the
outstanding social event
The eleventh and last lap of our journey was our SENIOR YEAR The D A R citizen
ship award went to joe Ann Dlx This year also marked an end to eleventh grade gradu
In the Control Tower flashing signals that kept us on our true course of noble char
acter and worthy deeds, sat our loyal and faithful friend, Mr james C Bell
Only four of the original pioneers completed the trip The other twelve have joined ue
at various other ports.
On the last lap of our journey a sudden change came over ue. We began to realize l-
most too late that one must work diligently if he is to attain a desired goal. We began to
understand more clearly the meaning of the bold faced type The Higher We Climb The
Broader The View".
God grant thpt we may ever alm high and accept willingly our share of responsibility
In making this "A Greater America."
"In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonlnga of chance
My head le bloody but unbowed."
William Ernest Henley
