Here Endethg
Here Beginneth
Here endeth a phase of each life
Here beginneth another new part
Here endeth our toil and our strife
Here maketh we each a new start.
I lere endeth our childish ways
Here beginneth our life in earnest
l lere endeth our care-free days
Here heginneth the years that are sternest.
Here endeth the friendships of youth
Whicll have brightened each passing day
Here strengtheneth bonds of truth
Wliicli ever lead the right way.
Here shineth knowledge as light
A heacon in lifels great test
O'ercoming the ignorance of night
And gaining the things which are best.
Here boweth we now to pray
To thank our Lord for His grace
And solemnly promise alway
To constantly seek His face.

'lille clock hands on the. basketball scoreboard were moving
raptdlv toward the end ol gameltitne. It was the last game
olkthe season. lhe team work dtsplaved bv the plavers, the
abtlitv of the coaches in their guidance, and the four quarters
ol hat'd work, companionship, and sincere efforts brought the
team of l95 seniors to the chatnpionship game of the year.
The buzzer sounded. The gatne was over. Our teatn, though
smaller than previous squads, was victorious.
Our trophv was a much desired diploma. After receiving
the award tttv teammates and I settled back to eniov a re-
view of the gatne highlights.
FIRST QUARTER
-The game began in the fall of l95l at J. NV. Cannon lliglt
with Miss Mvrtle Farrell as head coach. Aiding her were our
council metnbers,' Pat Dobv and Jcrrv Ridenhour. The captains
included Ctlberttne Maulden, president, James White, vice-
prestdentg Kellv Mabrv, secretarv, and Sandra jones, treasurer.
VVe weren't verv experienced and often the going was rough,
but soon we learned to know and become friends with the
other 357 members of the squad.
Near 'the end of the quarter, we had reallv learned the
knack of the gatne, and we celebrated with a square dance and
picnic in the gvm. Further proof of our advancements was the
electton of lxetth Lemlv and ,lerrv Ridenhour to the cheer-
leading squad.
SECOND QUARTER
The going became rougher and for this reason our team
was soon reduced to 299. Our new coach was Edwin L. Van-
Boole. Pushing the team up the steep cliff of learning were
our president, Max Barrett, vice-president, Bobbv VVallerg
secretarv, Richard jackson, and treasurer, Doug Russell. Serv-
ing as co-captains were David Bullock and Marv Margaret
Crtbhle, our council mentbers.
Gilbertine Maulden received the highest honor of the
quarter, as she served as treasurer of the student bodv.
Other honors went to ilflarv Margaret Gribble, Svlvia Mc-
Cotnmons, Gilbertine Maulden, Bettv Poole, and Kav
Ihomason when thev were tapped into the National llonor
Soctetv on hprohatton. David Bullock was merited for his
abtlttv and lotned the ranks of Kev Club International.
Much' cheering was 'needed to lead our club to victorv, so
jantce Solomon, Don 'I hompson, Pat Dobv, and Carolvn Phil-
lips were elected to help lead the vells for the next quarter.
TIIIRD QUARTER
VVL' were reallv a greatiball club now, 2-ll strong. VVith
the passing of time our friendships had grown deeper, our
knowledge had grown greater, and our abilities had improved
with experience.
I Mrs. Margie Riddle was head coach. and Kellv Mabrv and
jtmtnv Chatttbers were our co-captain council members. Aiding
us tn our advancement were our officers, David Bullock, pres-
tdentg Doug Russell, vice-presidentg Janice Solomon, secretarv:
Ctlbertme Maulden, treasurer, and Carolvn Phillips and Bettv
Bosttan, social chairmen.
I YVe proudlv watched Marv Margaret Cribble and Bettv Poole
installed as secretarv and treasurer of the student bodv.
This quarter we plaved such good ball, that ottr superiors
honored us at the Senior-junior. It was like a big "Mardi
Gras," and we knew we were coming along the road of suc-
cess.
The group worked together bv selling magazines and reallv
demonstrated teamwork in the preparation of the ,Iunior-Senior.
SENIOR CLASS HISTURY
Carolvn Phillips and Bettv Bostian lead the class in tltc ar-
rangements for the semi-formal banquet and dance, which
followed the theme "Ebbtide." Yes, moonlight at ebbtide,
starfish, and sprav, all carrv us back in a pleasurable wav, to
a ne'er to be forgotten first dav of Mav.
Dozens of the class took part in the iunior plav. "Cheaper
BV The Dozen," directed bv George Spence.
Because of the outstanding advancements of the team dur-
ing this quarter, we were all awarded a class ring, which we
wore with pride. Not long afterwards catne our unforgettable
trip to VVashington, D. C.
Receiving further honors for their abilities were Sandra
jones, David Bullock, Carolvn Phillips, Peggv Craven, Sarah
Ann Price, Patricia Elliott, and Bettv Bostian, who were tapped
into the Ilonor Societv. Jimmv Chambers and Robert Lowder
became tnetnbers of the Kev Club, and the Quill and Scroll
tapping accredited David Bullock, Gilbertine Maulden, Peggv
jo Overcash, Carolvn Phillips, Sarah Ann Price, Bettv Poole,
and Bettv Bostian. The newlv-organized Troupe l376 of the
National Thespian Societv credited Carolvn Phillips, Sandra
Iones, Tonv Sherrill, Carole Holland, David Bullock, Sarah
Ann Price, jimmv Chambers, and Bettv Bostian with out-
standing work in the dramatic field.
The highest honors of the entire game went to David Bullock
and Cilbertine Maulden, as thev were, respectivelv, elected
president and vice-president of the student bodv.
Betty Poole and Bettv Bostian were chosen co-editors of the
ALBROKAN and Brown Iligltlights, and further honors went to
Don Thompson, as he was elected chief cheerleader. janice
Solomon and Carolvn Phillips were elected to help him int-
prove school spirit.
Gilbertine Maulden was chief commencement marshal, as thc
quarter drew to a close. jerrv Council, Bettv Poole, Bettv
Bostian, Carol Crepps, Sandra Jones, Svlvia McCotntnons.
Peggv I0 Overcash, Bill Dunn, Iimmv Rogers, VVanda llearne.
and Marv Margaret Cribble were also cited for their scholastic
abilitv and served as commencement marshals. ,Ionnie Canttp
served as sttbstitute marshal.
FOURTH QUARTILR
The whistle blew. The big, experienced seniors took the
floor to plav the final quarter of the game. The quat'ter's activi-
tv included the election of officers, the selection of superla-
tives, the making of pictures in black ruffles and tuxedos. the
choice of ottr mascots, poem, flower, and motto, the measure-
ment for our caps and gowns, the ordering of invitations,
calling cards, and diplomas, and a whirlwind of exciting
events.
Our new coach was Miss Loraine Grav, our co captains, the
council members, Sandra Iones and Bill Dunn, and our leaders
were president, Robert Lowderg vice-president, Doug Russell:
secretarv, Marv Margaret Cribbleg treasurer. Peugv Craver, and
social chairmen, Ionnie Canup and Carolvn Phillips.
Cilbertine Maulden's poem "Here Iindeth, Here Beginncth"
was selected as the best one submitted. The gardenia was the
chosen class flower and pink and white, the colors. Vicki
Ludwig and Robert Mitchell were natned tnascots. "IIcre
ettdcth, here beginneth" was acknowledged as the motto of
the class.
Bobbv VValler and Buck Little served as co-captains of the
football team. with Buck Little receiving the coveted Lug
Lcazer Award.
Honors to the fairer sex were granted to Deatt Brigntan, "Miss
Brown High." She competed for the titles of "Miss Merrv
Christmas" and the queen of the Charlotte Carrousel. Janice
Solomon was selec'ed bv the football team to reign as Home-
coming Queen and Sandra Jones represented Brown Iligh as
Miss Ili Miss. This award is based on scholarship, character,
and bcautv.
Bill Dunn, jerrv Sweatt, Frederick Stirewalt, Cene Beam.
jerrv Chisholm, and Michael johnson were awarded member
ship in the Kev Club, David Bullock serving as Lieutenant
Governor of this division.
The Senior-Iunior, a real "Dream," at which we honored
the rising squad of seniors, still lingered in our rttinds, as we
attended the banquet and dance, the Junior-Senior, which
brought unforgettable memories. Near the end of the quarter
things reallv picked up. New tnembers were inducted into the
Kev Club and Thespian Societv, tappittgs for Quill and
Scroll and llonor Societv were held, and the senior plat
brought in profits for our gift to the school.
Finallv our annuals arrived, and thev tneant more to us
than ever before.
In the closing seconds, we had to reallv assutne the dignitv
of seniors, as we practiced for the Baccalaureate Sermon, Class
Dav, and, best of all, Graduation.
Then the buzzer sottnded. It was all over. VV4: had iust
lived four of the tnost wonderful quarters of our lives. Victorv
was ours!
The social lives we had learned to live, the mental knowl-
edge we had gained, our heart-breaking and heart-wartning
experiences, and our manv efforts had been advancements to
prepare us for the game we were now to plav, the Game of
Life.
Let us notthink ol' this ball game with a heavv heart, but
as .t preparation for a bigger and better game to be plaved in
the future,
