PREFACE
n 1949, when we entered Cannon High School, We hardly
co sidered ourselves a class, for we had all come from various
sc ols, different walks of life, and we had never seen many of the
str nge faces about us. Yet, gradually over a period of four years,
aft r learning to work with our classmates, discovering what to
ex ect of others, and what was expected of us, we finally matured
int the class of 1953.
'We became a definitely organized class with the Senior-Junior,
Junior-Senior, the Washington trip, class plays, the new school,
class rings, and the football team all becoming maior highlights
duifing our four years.
Now let us take this opportunity to review our past four years,
and in doing so, relive the thrills and excitements that went hand
in hand with them.
CHAPTER I
eading our class that first year were: Walker Jung, presidentg
C y Sherrill, vice-president, Wayne Dellinger, secretaryg Shirley
E erson, treasurer, who worked with Miss Betty Boyette, class
ad iser, to plan our first big social in high school, which was a
pi ic and square dance in the school gymnasium.
We elected Phyllis Finger and Harold Deal to represent our
class in Student Council for the year.
" CHAPTER II
s we began to get into the swing of things our Sophomore
r we elected Clark Drake, president, Jerry Daye, vice-president,
n Galliher, secretary, and Don Ritchie, treasurer. To represent
us in Student Council, we chose Gypsy Kennerly and Jerry Daye.
hen, to really get the ball rolling, the plans for .our new
hi h school, which was to be on First Street, were revealed.
T ough uneventful and unimportant as it may seem, this one
ye r probably affected our future more than any other of the four
ye rs. We now had a new school to look forward to.
rs. Vinson, class adviser working with us, planned our social
the year, a swimming party at Mirror Lake, at which swim-
g, food, and golf were enioyed by all.
hough very unusual for Sophomores, seven of our girls, Pat
M Manus, Gypsy Kennerly, Gloria Gilliam, Isabel Holbrook,
S rley Watts, Becky Goodman, and Jimmie Henderson, were
ta ped into the National Honor Society.

s Freshmen we had not been represented in a Student Gov-
er ent ofiice, so of course we were very proud of Walker Jung's
be g elected treasurer of the Student Government.
CHAPTER III
here were several highlights in our Junior year. The Junior-
Se ior, which honored the Seniors, was centered around the
th me, "Show Boat." Entertainment was rendered by Joyce Slaw-
so , Barbara Haneline, lngle Cook, and Don Ritchie, with Shirley
W tts and Jerry Myers at the piano. Following the banquet at
th Y.M.C.A. a dance was held in the school gymnasium.
he biggest event, by far, of the year was the long anticipated
W shington trip. The Capitol, Supreme Court Building, Arlington
C etery, Jefferson Memorial, Washington Monument, Luray
C erns, and the never-ceasing rain were long to be remembered
by all.
At a class meeting, Clark Drake, Gary Serrill, Bobby Keller,
Billy Strawn, Peggy Black, and Jerry Daye were elected president,
vit-president, secretary, treasurer and Council members, respec-
ti ly, with Miss Mariorie Harrell as class adviser.
"She Couldn't Remember," the Junior class play, directed by
Miss Sara Jordan, and the Senior-Junior, which was centered
around Valentine honoring us, were both special events of the year.
Then we finally had our class rings, which were shown with
pride for several weeks.
Three outstanding students'during the year were Walker Jung,
Secretary of Student Government and Vice-President of the North
C olina Student Council Con ress, David Castor, State Bible
Cl b Treasurerg and Carol Phillips, Homecoming Queen.
CAROL FERGUSON
Historian
Five of our girls, Carol Phillips, Carol Ferguson, Barbara Cline,
Jackie Gabriel and Billie Max Thomason, were tapped into the
National Honor Society.
The only Junior to be tapped into the honorary society of the
Quill and Scroll was Shirley Watts.
Six boys, Ronald Blackburn, Jimmy Beavis, Clark Drake, Jerry
Daye, Jimmy Icard, Walker Jung, were members of the Key Club
which was organized this year.
At last we were ready for our final year when we would be
Seniors.
CHAPTER IV
It now seemed as if a dream were at last a reality. Not only
were we Seniors after three long years, but we had entered our
new school, A. L. Brown High School, with hearts filled with
pride and joy. The auditorium, long halls, and individual lockers,
were proudly viewed by everyone. We were not the first class
to graduate from this fine new school, but we were the first class
to spend our whole Senior year in it.
This year was alive and buzzing with activity. First the long,
slow process of picture making of Seniors, superlatives, and clubs
for the annual of Brown High School. But the trouble was well
worth it and even more just to receive our treasured books.
Then caps and gowns, calling cards, and invitations had to be
ordered.
Mrs. Virginia Alexander, class adviser, aided the officers, David
Castor, presidentg Isabel Holbrook, vice-president, Carol Phillips,
secretary, Max Chandler, treasurer, the various committees, and
the class in choosing the class motto, "They conquer who believe
they can", the colors, wine and whiteg the iiower, the gardeniag
the poem by Myrtle Gulledge, "Ours for Memory", and the
mascots, Delaine Cannon and Rodney Holbrooks.
The Senior Edition of the ALBROKAN was dedicated to our
principal, Mr. Fred O. Drummond. .
This year six boys and three girls were tapped into the Quill
and Scroll. They were: Jimm Reavis, Joe Dowless, Joe Glass,
Walker Jung, Jerry Myers, Phil Tesh, Shelia Sasser, Gloria
Gilliam, Gelene Hutchins.
At a class meeting, Isabel Holbrook and Billy Strawn were
elected as Council members to represent the class.
The Key Club inducted four boys, who were Max Chandler,
Jerry Myers, Paul Fisher, David Castor into their club this year.
Our Student Government was headed by Walker Jung and
Jerry Daye, president and vice president,
To Shirley Watts the title, "Miss High Miss," based on beauty,
character, and scholarship, was awarded.
Phyllis Finger was elected as "Miss Brown High" and also
the queen of the Carrousel in Charlotte.
Perhaps the most amazing achievement was the fact that we
had an undefeated football team for the first time in the history
of our school. They were South Piedmont Conference Champion-
ship winners. Our hearts swelled with pride when Gary Sherrill
was chosen to play in the Shrine Bowl game, Clark Drake won
the Lug Leizer award, and Don Ritchie was chosen as the most
valuable player.
This was the most glorious year of all for us. With May came
the delightful whirl of Senior Dav, practicing for the beautiful
Class Day exercises, Baccalaureate Sermon, and Graduation exer-
cises, new dresses, new suits, I-lowers arriving, calling cards and
invitations coming, annuals being proudly read and signed, and
gifts opened in thrilling excitement. It was a ioy to be young,
alive and graduating rom high school. Other days might be
dark, but these were heavenly.
CONCLUSION
As we leave A. L. Brown High School, our Alma Mater, we
shall always remember what it has meant to us, and there shall
always be a warm, tender spot in our hearts for Cannon High
School, too. It is hard to realize that we are leaving, never to
return as students again, and that we are parting from many of
our friends never to see them again. But always in our hearts
we shall cherish the fond memories of our four wonderful years
together.

EL ss PHUPHEEY
i
All alone, in my gloomy laboratory, I stepped back and
vi wed the work of five years with an artist's pride-the
rld's first time machine! Eagerly I set the dial. Time:
68. Place: Kannapolis, my home town. Triumphantly,
w
I
I te ped into the diffusion chamber, and soon felt myself
w irling through eternity. The sensation ceased, and I
lo ked around anxiously. I had arrived in Kannapolis,
g den spot of the world. A arade was coming down the
st eet and loudspeakers blaredi Walker Jung for Congress-
m n, Joe Glass for Senator. Some of my classmates had
a parently gone into politics. I cheered furiously, turned
a und, and bumped into Phil Tesh. He was wearing a
t edo, and lettered across the front were these words of
i nite wisdom: "Rent a tux at Holbrooksf' He ex-
p ined that his wife, Isabel. forced him to wear it con-
st ntly. Then he began to tell me about our Senior Class.
enry McDowell, Conard Baker, and Paul Fisher had
le t town abruptly, and were now smuggling guns into
gentina. Norma Yates and Sue Hinson had attained
t e rank of second lieutenant in the WACS. Others, in
t e Armed Services were James Overcash, Gene Simpson,
a d Arvil Shepherd. I questioned him further and learned
t at a number of my friends were now married. Among
t ese were Shirley Armstrong and Jimmy Campbell, Nancy
P well and Elmo Hoffman, and Billy Ashley and Gelen
utchins. Carol Phillips and Dot Simmons are the co-
o ners of a fashionable dress shop where the Gloria Gil-
li m exclusives are created. The Business Men's Associa-
ti n was passing by now in the parade and I spotted some
I knew: Billy Ford, department store ownerg Clyde Lapish,
u ed-car dealerg and Wayne Phillips, loan shark.
Having nothing else to do, I decided to take in a movie.
I bought a ticket from Ann Childers and walked in. I was
i mediately greeted by Tommy Thomas, the manager.
e began to tell me about the picture, which was 'ADeath
0 the Desert" starring Phil Rainey and Gerry Foil. The
cfedits began to flash on the screen as I sat down-produced
Joe Dowless, directed by Bobby Hunsucker, musical
s ore by Jerry Myers, costumes by ack Middleton,
omen's gowns by Gypsy Kennerly, an sets by Ronnie
oberts and Wallace Ritchie. My attention was distracted
a noisy group of nurses in front of me. Among these
ere Bobbie Jean Gibson, Shirleen Cline and Mildred
arlow. They were talking to two more of my friends who
d been lucky enough to elude marriage. Larry Goldston
d Gary Holder. I suddenly became bored with the pic-
t re and left. I bumped into Bobby Helms on the way
t, and he informed me that he is a dentist in New
rleans. He spoke highly of a new singing act at the
lub Bayou, which is owned by Carl Morton. They call
t emselves the Allen Sisters, but they are really Patsy
ussell, Nancy Cloninger, and Barbara Haneline.
I walked down the street to a newsstand, bought a paper,
nd sat down in the park to read. The first thing I saw,
i blazing headlines was: "Local Girl Swims English
hannelf' Early this morning, Phyllis Messer became the
fth woman to swim the English Channel. Feeding her
ndwiches from the rowboat were Carolyn Huffman and
arbara Brooks, international tennis stars. Looking further
own the page, I noted that Bill Doby had won the Bronze
tar in action on the Western Front. I tumed rapidly to
e sports page, where many of my classmates were men-
'oned. Grimsley Seamon was playing left end for the
hicago Bears, along with Gary Sherrill at right tackle. I
oticed that Barbara Hill had become the women's na-
ional golf champion. David Castor and Maxine Petrea
ad been placed on the Olympic swimming team. Clifford
kevin and Sonny Cobb were waging a hot battle for
oney-making honors as iockeys at Pimlico. I also saw that
rown High had completed another successful season with
on Ritchie as coach and Clark Drake as his assistant.
LI then began looking over the comics. Jerry Cavin and
nn Carter had comic strips of their own, and were making
great deal of money. Jean Lindsay also had a humorous
aily cartoon in the paper.
I I turned to the financial section, and was pleased to'
I
learn that Guy Freeze and Charles Gribble were suc-
cessful Wall Street stockbrokers.
Jerry Bradshaw and Jimmy Howell had opened a fac-
tory in Charlotte, and were now being investigated by the
Government on a charge of having too many secretaries.
The paper mentioned their names and I remembered a
few: Peggy Canup, Patricia Whitley, Gail Gilliam, and
Elaine Goble.
Further down the page was a large advertisement stating
that Colonel Richard Byrd's Colossal Circus was in town.
It featured Steve Falls, sword swallowerg Delma Goins
and Bobby Hollar, trapeze artistsg Phil Helms, magician,
and Ralph Melton and Bankie Moore, clowns. I turned
the page and glanced briefly at the society section. I dis-
covered that Max Chandler, noted surgeon, and his wife,
the former Peggy Black, had entertained at their home
the night before. Among those present were Jimmie Icard,
a minister in Charlotteg Carol Ferguson, novelist, Shirley
Watts, concert pianist, and Bill Black, one of the vice-
presidents of Cannon Mills.
On the next page was an announcement that the Sani-
tary Cafe was under new managementg namely, Phyllis
Canup and Jane Peeler. There was also an ad for the
Acme Service Station, which was owned by Pat Whitley
and Marvin Overcash. I read also that Hartsell Lea Os-
borne had iust returned from a milliner's convention in
Chicago, while Marlene Clampet and Doris Lunsford
had been to New York to get the latest hair style from
Paris. Darlene Herman and Shelia Sasser are also in New
York, modeling dresses. I then read a review of Patty
Petrea's latest book by Joan Wilson and Barbara Cline,
librarians.
Well, that ended the paper, so I decided to go for a
walk in the park. I walked down the winding path and
came upon a group of Boy Scouts. Their leader was none
other than Bobby Keller. He told me that Ronald Black-
burn and Jerry Daye had opened a large sporting goods
store in Atlanta. Also in Atlanta were Faye Lipe and
Phyllis Bentley, two of the nation's outstanding women
wrestlers. Many of my acquaintances had been captured
by the white lights of Broadway. Loretta Crowe, Audrey
Grass, and Joann Carlton had big roles in one of the new
plays. Hubert Griffin and Keith Austin were owners of
a soda shop on Fourth Avenue. Jackie Gabriel owns a
large stable of thoroughbreds in Westchester. Danny Argo,
Carol Barnett, and Carol Hipps are chorus girls in the
musical comedy, "Two for the Money."
Some of our girls liked Washington so much when we
toured there in 1952 that they decided to return and work
for the government. Among these are Martha Poston,
Juanita Donaldson, and Jacqueline Davis. Pat McManus
and Kay Moss are policewomen in Chicago. Barbara Poole
and Kay Turner are stenographers in Los Angeles. In
Charlotte, we fmd Mariorie Farmer, Sara Jo Newson, and
June Lane Medlin working as telephone operators.
Just for kicks, I decided to visit Brown High once again.
I walked in the door and found to my surprise that many
of the teachers were among the class of '53. These were
Luci Ballard, art, Joan Galliher, algebrag Billie McCombs,
bookkeepingg Clinton Misenheimer, mathematics, Billie
Max Thomason, historyg and Ann Barlow, physical edu-
cation.
There was nothing exciting happening at high school, so
I decided to go home. I Went inside, sat down, and turned
on the television set. There was a panel discussion going
on with Max Dula as moderator. The Democrats were
represented 'by Lloyd Wike and the Republicans by
Everett Lovett. This ended with Wike being thrown out
by three studio policemen, two of these being Bill Cauble
and Charles Scercy.
Next came Jimmy Hubbard's variety show, and I sat
back to watch it. The first act was the celebrated comedy
team of Charles Fink and Richard Griflin, with a short
routine of iokes and stories. Next came the Brooklyn Glee
Club, under the direction of Ingle Cook. There was a
EL S5 PHUPHEEY
spattering of local talent present, and I would consider
myself a barbarian if I did not tell you their names. They
were: Suzanne Huskey, Josephine Edwards, Bobby Brooks,
and Betty Tilley. They sang a few numbers and ran off
the stage as fast as they could. The next act was two
acrobats, Frank Allman and Junior Ball. They did a couple
of difficult feats and received a nice round of applause.
The next number was a dance team composed of Hazel
Mathis and Gail Collins, which ended the program.
I was then interrupted by a knock on the door. It was
Robert Hinson, owner of the Towel City Theatres. He
had been keeping close tabs on most of the senior class
since graduation. He gave me the word on a few I hadn't
heard about. Clark Bowman is in the Navy and has
reached the rank of first lieutenant. but he has not done
as well as Richard Nash, who is an admiral.
You can pick up almost any magazine these days and
find on its cover a picture of Phyllis Finger, one of New
York's most beautiful models. She appeared on the cover
of Life this week, and most of the credit goes to Joe Hill,
her press agent. Jimmy Reavis, incidentally, has been
editor of this magazine for quite some time along with
Marvin Taylor as advertising manager. John Sweeney is
a highly successful author in Atlantic City. Ralph Robin-
ette and Rufus Cauble are working on a construction
proiect in Ohio. June Gurley is working in the same busi-
ness office in Cleveland, where Dickie Bolick is advertis-
ing manager.
Bobby Reynolds has become a chemist in Boston at the
Screech Manufacturing Company. The Screech Company,
incidently, is owned by two women, Lottie Tucker and
Betty Vinson, who have done very well in the big city.
Glenola Allen, Phyllis Boger, and Joyce Ingle have formed
a landscape gardening business in Beverly Hills, California.
They have recently landscaped the home of Frances Cran-
ford, glamorous star of stage and screen.
Bobby Mauldin is a noted Charlotte architect and has
iust finished designing a new high school, of which Arnold
Shaver is to be principal.
Charles King is a doctor at Bellevue Hospital and seems
to have surrounded himself with local nurses. A few of
these are Barbara Weaver, Lucille Munday, Ravenelle
Mitchell, and Hazel Williams. Faye Freeze is in charge
of the S Sr W Cafeteria in Charlotte, having gained valu-
able experience in high school. Many of the girls I knew
had chosen business careers, but others preferred the quiet
existence of the housewife. A few of these are Pearl Earn-
hardt, Loretta Bassett, and Jean Thomas.
Gene Walker and Carlton Walls have recently become
quite rich. They have discovered a gold mine in Utah.
Also rather wealthy are Bobby Coe and Elmer Hartsoe,
who work at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in
Washington. They never forgot the sight of all that money.
If one were in Charlotte, he would discover that Joyce
Slawson, Shirley Thomas, and Louise Query are slaying
away as telephone operators. Overseeing the whole opera-
tion is Barbara Smith.
Speaking of overseers, there are a couple of boys who
have attained that rank in Cannon Mills. These are Charlie
Cline and James Nesbitt. James Hill and Billy Lisk have
gone into the manufacturing business. They make cigarette
lighters, which are designed by Peggy Deese.
A few of the former students, such as Martha Pittman
and Norma Rainey, have taken an interest in acting and
are touring the country in a new play. Wendell Howard
is a lawyer right here in Kannapolis. He is so busy he
requires two secretaries, Sarah King and Betty Ingram, to
handle his correspondence.
The Colonial Grill has been bought by two girls, Shirley
Hampton and Nancy Coble. They have made Rachel
Perkins manager and have employed Billie Collins and
Louella Richardson as waitresses. They have a floor show
consisting of the Beam sisters, Laura and Phyllis, who are
not really sisters but make more money by pretending
they are.
At this point, I interrupted Robert's absorbing monologue
to turn on the radio. I listened to the honeyed words of
Boris J. Whitesides, the announcer. The announcer was
babbling about a meeting last night of the South Main
Street Forward and Pilau Ladies' Etaoin Shrldu Club.
Among those present were Juanita Goodnight, Barbara
Fox, Margaret Hix, Myrtle Gulledge, Frances Whitley,
and Sara Joann Smith. CHousewives, in case you're won-
dering.j
Robert then switched off the radio, since it was drowning
out his recital. Frances Moon and Shirley Wilhelm are
charming stewardesses for Trans-VVorld Airlines, where
James Teague is a pilot. Norma Brumbeloe has opened a
florist's shop in North Kannapolis, and has Shirley John-
son, Magdalene Lamb, and Rachel Thomas working for
her. Many of the former students had settled down to live
in Charlotte. Nancy Payne, Patsy Watson and Evelyn
Polk are secretaries for the Hayes Manufacturing Com-
rany, which is owned, naturally enough, by Jerry Hayes.
Here, we come upon a strange phenomenon-a trucking
company owned and operated entirely by women, The
Hilton and Pope Transfer Company, 'owned by Pansy
Hilton and Louise Pope. The manager is Mary Catherine
Honeycutt. They employ about twenty girls as clerks and
accountants, but there were only a few I knew, these being
Gwendolyn Freeze, Christine Donahue, and Evelyn Mar-
tin. Mary Russell, Mariorie Torrcnce, Betty Patterson, and
Mary Ross have done well as truck drivers, but as women
do, they stick their arm out the window to dry their nail
polish. Billy Wiles and Bill Strawn have heeded the advice
of Horace Greeley Cnot a studentl and "gone west."
They struck oil in Oklahoma and are living like kings.
Dallene Crainshaw, who is quite rich, loaned them the
money with which to make their start. She owns almost
every bank in North Carolina, and usually hires her
friends to manage them for her. In charge of the Kanna-
polis branch is Joyce Honeycutt, with Velma Woodard
as head cashier. In Concord. Rachel Pope is in charge with
Joyce Spry as head cashier. Tommie Jo Campbell is
manager of the bank in China Grove.
Frank Clampet and Ralph Nesbitt are tree surgeons in
Punxsatawney, Pennsylvania, which is the home of
Kathryn Gibson and Frances Gregory. These girls are
married, have several children, and do not seem to miss
Kannapolis in the least. Two other girls who are married
and don't miss Kannapolis are Shirley McNeil and Anne
Fesperman who are living in Anchorage, Alaska.
Shirley Chambers, Evelyn Simpson, and Faye Garyer
have become interior decorators in Miami, and have
amassed a small fortune.
Robert then admitted that this was all he knew about
the class of '53. I grabbed him furiously by the shoulders
and screamed, "What ever happened to Morris Grass?"
Robert confided that Morris had last been seen riding off
into the sunset, yodeling softly to himself.
I bade Robert goodbye, for I could feel my electrons
fading away. I was whirled back through time, and soon
found myself in the gloomy laboratory from whence I had
come.

No one can really ever say,
That memories only die,
For when we don a cap and gown,
There is a telling sigh.
Only because a dream comes true,
We whisper a soft goodbye.
So then we suddenly realize,
The future steps are high.
Though trying to forget the past,
It still comes slipping through,
Reniinding us to pray to God,
Andi have Him guide us true.
A cap, a gown, and a diploma
Start our lives anew.
A voice inside just keeps repeating
Wittiest

Being resplendent in the knowledge that it was in

these cherished halls with tradition strong and true
and always uphold the standard that we have set for
you.
