ARL 14 USS MINOS THE USS MINOS (ARL 14) is a repair ship for landing type vessels built as the LST 644 by the Chicago Bridge Iron Company, Seneca, 111., in August 1944 and converted by Gibbs Gas Engine Co., Jacksonville, Florida in 1945 by the installation of several repair shops and storerooms on the tank deck, main deck and superstructure deck. Additional weight lifting, steam and electrical generating equipment were also installed during the conversion. The LST characteristics such as length, breadth, and speed remained unchanged and are approximately; Length 328 ft.; Breadth 50 ft.; and speed 10 knots. The USS MINOS was named from the Greek Mythological King of Crete, a great lawgiver said to have been the son of Jupiter and Europa, who, after his death became one of the great Judges of dead souls. The USS MINOS was first commissioned on 26 September 1944 and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets until she was decommissioned in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet at Green Cove Springs, Florida in June 1947. She was recommissioned 22 Sep- tember 1950 and assigned to the Amphibious Forces, U. S. Atlantic Fleet. Since being recommissioned the USS MINOS (ARL 14) has operated at the U. S. Naval Amphibious Base, at Little Creek, Virginia. The major portion of the time per- forming repair services to vessels of Landing Ship Flotilla TWO. She participated in Fleet Exercises in the Caribbean in the fall of 1951 and other routine exercises in the Chesapeake Bay- Virginia Capes Area.
