TUDENTS The excitement of the American Field Service Experience began with a ten day voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. For seven hundred students this was only an introduction to an unforgettable summer. After docking in Rotterdam, Holland, a midnight flight to Athens, and a six hour bus trip through the villages of Southern Greece, I finally arrived in Patras where I was to live. lt was here that I lived with the Rally family in an apartment overlooking the sea and the mountains. My sister Rena, age Io, brother Andrew, I3, mother, and father, owner of a medical supply company, made it possible for me to visit much of the surrounding country. Excur- sions were taken to Athens, Olympia, Delphi, Epadaurus, the island of Zante, and countless museums. There was also special meetings with United States Embassy officials and parties in the home ofthe Ambassador. Each day of the summer presented a new experience in human emotion: the dignity and ioy of a Greek Orthodox wed- ding, the grief of a village funeral, the horror of a communist rally. It was indeed an inspiring experience to live with a people filled with love and enthusiasm for their country and culture. It awakened within me an intense desire to learn not only of the treasures of Greece but also of the greatness of the nation I repre- sented - the United States of America. Yours, Mary lane Mary Jane Gilbert Christine Van Biervliet Belgium possesses a lot of variety in its landscape. In comparison to the flat northern part, southern Belgium is a hilly green country. Brussels, the capital, is one of the most important cities of western Europe, old, historic, now the center of the common market. In the United States this year, I lived the life of a typical American Teenager. It was fun to attend the foot- ball and basketball games, all so new to me. l enjoyed all the school activities and I learned very much about leadership through such organizations as Stu- dent Government and Girls' League. l will always remember the lively atmosphere of West High, the many friends and teachers who contributed to make my stay the nicest possible. This year has been one of the most rewarding in my life, an experience to which I will always be able to look back with happiness and good memories. I learned many good things about the United States and its people which I will take back to my country. You rs, Cbriftine .........., , U ---W' -- D- rl- -'A

FGREIGN EXCHANGE To my great grief, my stay here at West High will soon be at an end. lt is with several tears in my eyes that I have to leave Phoenix. Here I have had the most interesting and successful experience of my entire life. All this iust because of you wonderful people at West. All I can say is: THANK YOU. The beginning was trying when the heat simply knocked me down. As the year went on I felt more and more at home with both temperature and friends. In contrary to my school in Sweden l here got the opportunity to enjoy all kinds of school-activities and sport-events. I have, through you, gained a new and different picture of American youth. Here at West I learned that American boys and girls are very similar to the youth in my country. I hope to return to your beautiful country one day. Memories from this year will never fade and will always live within me. My stay here will remain a part of me for ever.
