Marines Return Home After 3 Years of War . .-.i ii, Weslaco Boys See Greater Part Of Pacific Campaignsg Two Receive Purple Hearts for Tarawa, Tinian Three years ago tomorrow the first mid-term graduation exer- cises ever held in Weslaco High took place. Graduating were eight boys-B. R. Guess, Leo Ryan, Harlon Block, Glen Cleckler, Robert Sooter Carl Sims Pete Hall and Leo LaDuke-who left school to enlist in the Marines and fight for their country and what it stands or A a farewell gesture the HI LIFE staff sponsored a campaign to sell a hundred dollars in war bonds and stamps for each of the eight bovs The oal w s easily passed 'md when the final count xt as t len approximately S1800 in bonds and stamps had been sold Vow after three years of strenuous war the seven left of the e chi bovs hare retm ned home It is not that we are prouder of these boys than of others who left our midst but since they left together to join the same branch of the service and slnce they had all been members of the Panther football team we feel that they constitute a rather unusual group Compared to the travels of these boys Marco Polo s trip to China looks l1ke a walk around the block on Sunday afternoon If added together the miles which they have traversed would reach well over the hundred thousand mark We flnd that though they went through boot camp together they were for the most part separated as they went into advanced training In fc llowing them through advanced training we find them stationed at Chicago Camp Pendelton Camp Kernemesa Texas A 8: M and Camp Elliot to mention a few From there their trails turned to Pearl Harbor the nerve center of the United States Pacific war From Pearl Harbor their patns f rned out in all directions how ever some vt ere almost identical B R Guess Pete Hall and Robert Sooter for instance saw action on Tinian and Saipan and were on Okmavsa Recently they xx ie statloned at Nagasaki proxin ground of the tom bomb B P xx is xx ounded in the battle of T mama and received the Purple Heart and Robert received om for vtounds recexxed on Tinian Leo Ryan who was in mainte oxerseas time on Jonnsor lslax sl bcto e he sh pped home nd xx s ten a medical disch rge Leo LtDuke was stationed tor some time n the lar halls vthexe he uas a machinists mate As a rad o 'Tl n on an 'urphn 1 ous tractor Carl Sims savs 'ne be ches of Guadalcanal Gu rn Saipan aid I so J1l'l 3 vu ile Glen unit on Palmyra and in the Mar shalls and was later in a morta clew cn Iwo Jim Ol' the eight who marched away one will never return The chances of all ol' the eight returning were very slight indeed but lt is our deep regret that on March 1 1945 Harlon Block was called upon to lay down his life for his country on the bloody little volcanic peak of Iwo Jima 'lhe greatest of all wars is now our great country IS no longex iequlred to fight nd die on some lonelv atoll and it is our hope hat they will now flnd the cm ten ment o 1 chls and security which they deserxe P uth noun ers Jac And vou s y radio an have small hands' Certainly' Wee paws m Cleckler was in an anti air: t tn xdentm 'ation' ' I 7 i . ,, X .
