Jazz Groups Host Band Festival According to the Jazz Ensemble director, Mr. Heninger, the most enjoyable thing the band did was play at Concord Elementary School in November. He commented, The little kids really got into the music. Both the Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Lab played at the jazz festival that was held here at WHS in February. The Dodgeland and Hartford jazz bands were invited, along with a professional jazz band, The Mike Snustead Quartet from Milwaukee. On June 3 both bands participated in the Pops concert at the Junior High along with the junior high jazz bands and both swing choirs. The Jazz Ensemble tried concentrating on using more of the synthesizer at this concert. 1. The trumpet section of Jazz Lab practiced for the Pops concert. - 2. Doctor Bisbee and Gary Ehnert played during an evening Jazz Band practice. 3. Rich Lessner kept the beat. 4. Bands Compete At Georgia The Symphonic Band and the Wind Ensemble had a busy year with concerts, contests, and fundraising. The biggest event was a trip to Six Flags Over Georgia in Atlanta for a band competition. The groups considered it an honor to be invited because it was a national competi- tion. Both bands participated in fund raising activities for the trip. Students sold records and magazine subscrip- tions and raised S2,000. An auction was held in the High School gymnasium which raised S2,200. In addition to the fundraising events, the students provided a portion of the money for expenses. The Wind Ensemble was evaluated at an adjudacation clinic and received a rating of II. The categories for judging were: tone, intonation, balance, technique, inter- pretation, and musical effect. This constructive criticism helped the band prepare for the competition in Georgia. l. The marching band added the dimension of music to the Homecom- ing parade. 2. The clarinet section of the Symphonic Band practiced for their Christmas concert. 3.
