1:5-4 apollos blast rams 40-7 the sharpstown apollos had the waltrip rams under glass in the astrodome as the mistake ridden rams fell for the third straight 5-vt' ig. week. the ram mistakes turned into apollo points as the rams struggled to get across the 50 yardline. waltrip suffered five pass interceptions and two lost fumbles, on the plus side, steve simons ran well as the ram fullback during an 80 yard drive and bill bige- low hit jeff kirby with a 34 yard scoring strike. mark howe added the point after, waltrip's defense was led by glen martin and bill ward. . -as 1 rams rip panthers 15-6 the waltrip rams are alive and well. beginning the race for the district 19-4a championship, the rams eliminated mistakes and turned the davis panthers back toward home. steve simons led all ram ball carriers with 144 yards on 19 tries and two touchdowns. mark howe kicked a 22 yard field goal. the field general for the fired up rams was jeff wood who directed the offense to a sea- son high 275 yards rushing and passing. chief receiver for wood was jeff kirby. several big blocks were thrown on offense by darryl chat- man, terry vaughan, charles hoelscher, and richard stallings, on defense, bill bigelow led the 4' pass interception chase while mark howe, david williams, and ramon lopez also had intercep- tions. tommy artz recovered a fumble that led to a ram score, several outstanding defensive plays were made by ricky Clements, bill ward, and glen martin. 57

yellowjackets sting rams 22-0 the Waltrip rams found that the port arthur yellow- jackets had too much sting. aided by many ram turn- overs 'and mistakes, the yellowjackets raced by for 22 easy points. Waltrip did have some bright spots, mainly from the pass catching of kirk danna, and the heads-up defensive play of mike newhouse, glen martin, fred grant, cedric mclendon, bill Ward, and roy kruemcke. the quarterbacking chores Were han- dled by bill bigeloW and jeff Wood. cardinals cage rams 19-2 head coach john spheeris was given a harsh homecoming by his former mates from bellaire. many Waltrip errors cost the rams their second loss in as many games. Waltrip quarterback bill bigelow could not overcome our many lost fumbles to continue a drive of any length. jeff Wood came in to direct the rams to their longest drive. cecil Ward made a tackle in the end zone to give the rams their only points thus far in this young sea- son. ramon lopez blocked an extra point and intercepted a pass for the Waltrip defense. 56

kashmere clips waltrip 27-9 this was the battle of the rams, with the kashmere rams ranked number one in the state, the underdog rams were not impressed, as they brought a fight to the sur- prised kashmere rams, waltrtp's fired up offense moved the ball amosf at will, lead- ing in first downs 14 to 12. except for two bombs and a fluke lateral pass that turned into 6 points, the stubborn waltrip defense held kashmere to less yardage than any other team thus far. steve simons, after being named player of the week against davis, led the offense along with the hard running of cecil ward, cedric mclendon, and the improving kirk danna. bill bigelow came in to quarterback after jeff wood was lnlured early in the game, behind key blocks by terry vaughan, charles hoelscher, glen martin, fred grant, mike shannon, darryl chatman, and richard stall- ings, bigelow ran and threw key passes to move the rams. the press box of visiting coaches was buzzing about the hard-hitting ram defense led again by ricky cle- ments, richard spencer, bill ward, mike newhouse, and roy kruemcke. waltrip sec- ondary standouts stopped key kashmere drives with david williams and steve childs intercepting passes kirk danna scored lor waltrip from one yard out and mark howe kicked the point after. a strong rush by the defense caused the kashmere center to snap the ball out ol the end zone for a safety, the pepped up waltrip rams really did their stuff. -A an rams tame tigers 23-O the waltrip rams are for real. after beating davis and giving kashmere a run for their money, the rams continued their aggressive play by turning back the sam houston tigers. jeff wood directed the team on several drives picking the tiger defense apart for big gains with steve simons, cecil ward, kirk danna, and steve childs running the ball, and james miles and richard stallings making big catches. mark howe started the scoring with a 37 yard field goal late in the first quarter. alter another drive fell short, the rams lined up for another field goal from 30 yards out. but, to the surprise of the tigers, bill bigelow pulled up and hit gary marett in the end zone fora hard earned 6 points. key pass interceptions by david williams, cedric mclendon, and mark howe kept the waltrip herd going all night. jeff wood hit richard stallings with a scoring strike for 19 yards with stallings doing a nifty bit of running to get into the end zone. later, cecil ward got a plug of turf for his first touch- down of the year. the waltrip offensive line -- terry vaughan, mike shannon, darryl chatman, fred grant, charles hoelscher, and richard stallings - gets much credit for another fine job. on defense, several rams bowed their backs and refused to allow the sam houston offense to cross their goal. tommy kubin put the tigers deep in their own end of the field several times with outstanding punting. standouts on defense were david williams, ramon lopez, glen martin, mike newhouse, richard spencer, fred grant, and bill ward. 58 , .am ng
