GI' blaz fa A T 7 Lee A. Mann, Fall Semester, 1974, editor of The Trailblazer, inspects stories written by the staff of VU's weekly student newspaper. Twenty- nine issues were published the 1974-75 school year. Mann was graduated at the end of Fall Semester. The Trailblazer, the University's weekly student newspaper, seeks with each Friday's issue to report and interpret the campus community. Journalism majors invest from 50 to 60 hours a week, typically, to produce the prize-winning publication. The Trailblazer's honors include, through Fall Semes- ter, 1974,15 consecutive All-American Awards-the highest rating conferred by Associated Collegiate Press- and 19 such accolades in the last 20 semesters. The VU campus newspaper also dominated Division ll of the Indiana Collegiate Press Associations 1975 Newspaper Contest, winning four first-place citations and three second places in the 14-category competition. Top honors wereearned for news story, editorial, and sports writing and for investigative reporting. Ftunnerup recognitions were for news photography, editorial car- toons, and sports writing. The Trailblazer was established Oct. 31, 1923, and became a weekly Sept. 22, 1966. The 1974-75 school year marked the beginning of the newspaper's second half-century-in the aftermath of numerous Golden Anniversary events and projects sponsored by the VU Journalism Program throughout the 1973-74 school year including a 20-page Golden Anniversary Issue of The Trailblazer. Prof. Fred Walker Jr. is publisher of The Trailblazer and director of the Journalism Program. Michael J. Cain, '75, addresses the more than 150 guests at the annual Journalism Awards Dinner, April 26, 1975. Cain was Spring Semester, 1975, editor of The Trailblazer, the University's weekly student news- paper.
