Jones and Arnie Zane. roup performs by Amy Sailer The lobby of the Performing Arts Center was crowded with people minutes before the scheduled ap- pearance of the Zagreb Philhar- monic Feb. 16. Ushers stationed around the doors of the auditorium, made sure nobody entered. An elder- ly gentleman looked perplexed, and his impeccably dressed wife seemed annoyed ' at the delay. Strains sounded through the closed doors. My God. Are they practicing? a patron asked. Finally, after a half-hour delay, the auditorium doors opened and people were shown to their seats. The management apologized for the delay, and the Zagreb Philharmonic filed onstage and mouths fell open in the audience. Faded blue jeans and sweatshirts colored the stage. There was not one black tie not a tie of any sort adorning the necks of any of the musicians. There were no skirts, no traditional black and white. One of the members stepped to the podium and looked out beseechingly into the audience. A microphone was placed before him and he began the unbelievable story. The forlorn-looking gentleman, clad in blue jeans and corduroy vest, was Pavle Despalj, conductor of the famed orchestra. He explained that on the or- chestra ' s flight from New York, the airline had lost the musicians ' lug- gage and instruments. The in- struments they held in their hands had been lent to them from CIT music professors and students, and the music they were about to play was from the CIT Music Library. They had practiced it only an hour before. The audience exploded into ap- plause as Despalj asked for patience in his broken English. Valter Despalj, Pavle ' s brother, the cello soloist, also agreed to perform. Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello, Opus 33 by Peter Tchaikovsky never sounded as good as it did in blue jeans and sneakers. 74 Zagreb Philharmonic
