Stanford rallied to cut the lead to 24- 23. The Horns took control again when tailback Charles Hunter slammed over the goal line from 1 yard out. However, Stanford knotted the game at 31-31 with a touchdown pass and a two-point conversion. With the Cardinals leading 34-31. Dodge directed a 73-yard drive that culminated with a Hunter 3-yard touchdown run to give Texas a 38-34 win. It looked for a while like the team which had the ball last would win it. Coach Fred Akers said. But we were able to make the big defen- sive stand when it counted. Texas hit the road again Oct. 12 to battle archrival Oklahoma in Dallas ' Cotton Bowl. The trip was the first of two unsuccessful trips to Dallas in 1985, as the Horns fell prey to the Sooner defense 14-7. The Sooners outplayed the Longhorns in every aspect. Texas passed for 53 yards and lost three in- terceptions, while Oklahoma picked up 67 yards. Taking the rocky road Squad meets with problems away from home turf by Daria Albinger Even though the Longhorns foot- ball team fared well on its own turf, road trips often put Texas on shaky ground. The team lost three of six games and came away from the vic- tories by only narrow margins. In the second week of the season, the team traveled to Palo Alto, Calif., to play the only game of the season on grass. There, against Stanford, Texas dominated the line of scrim- mage the entire first half, starting with a 74-yard touchdown run by quarterback Bret Stafford. In the second quarter, Longhorn passing quarterback Todd Dodge stepped in to hit receiver Donovan Pitts with a 45-yard pass for a second Longhorn touchdown and Pitts ' first college reception. The first half scor- ing ended with fullback Darron Mor- ris ' 62-yard touchdown scramble. At the end of the day, the 5-foot-ll, 199-pound freshman had 154 yards on 1 1 carries. The line did a great job, Morris said. They made holes big enough for three guys to go through. OU loss To make things worse, the CIT rushing game was limited to 17 yards on 35 attempts, compared with the Sooners ' 220 yards. In the second half, the Texas of- fense gained only 24 yards. We couldn ' t do many things in the third quarter because of the field position and the wind against us, Akers said. And in the fourth quarter, we had to throw when we got behind and we didn ' t get the protection we needed. The game ' s lone bright spot came when defensive end Kip Cooper caught Sooner fullback Thomas Carr ' s fumble in midair at the (XI 7- yard line and scored to give Texas a 7-0 lead. Bouncing back from the loss to Oklahoma, Texas traveled to Fay- etteville, Ark., the following week to play the fourth-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks, a game which Texas won on the strength of Jeff Ward ' s leg. He connected on field goals of 34, 33, 49, 55 and 34 yards to give the Longnorn squad a 15-13 upset victory and a 2-0 SWC record. 136 Football
