Stafford completed 7 of 1 passes for 1 36 yards and had one rush for 28 yards. The Horns won the game on the strength of tailback Edwin Sim- mon ' s performance. He carried the ball 22 times for 90 yards, and his eight-yard touchdown in the second quarter not only was crucial to the Texas win, but it gave Simmons his first touchdown since Texas ' game against TCCI the previous season. Although Texas outscored Baylor, the statistics pointed in the other direction. The Bears led the contest in first downs, return yardage and time of possession. Meanwhile, the Longhorns led in two positive categories as well as two negative statistics. Texas amassed 333 yards in total offense compared to Baylor ' s 282-yard total. The Horns also were leaders in punting and, unfortunately, in both turnovers and penalty yards. But Akers did not seem too upset by the statistics. When bombarded by reporters ' questions, the (JT head coach smiled and said, Did we do anything but win? The final home game of the season saw the Longhorns and the Baylor Bears filled with hopes for the con- ference crown and a trip to the Cottton Bowl. Keeping their hopes alive and setting up a showdown with Texas A M in the season finale, Texas beat Baylor 17-10 Nov. 23. The (JT defense, playing perhaps its best game of the season, held the Bears to 153 rushing yards and 129 passing yards. Taking the rocky road Squad meets with problems away from home turf by Daria Albinger Even though the Longhorns foot- ball team fared well on its own turf, road trips often put Texas on shaky ground. The team lost three of six games and came away from the vic- tories by only narrow margins. In the second week of the season, the team traveled to Palo Alto, Calif., to play the only game of the season on grass. There, against Stanford, Texas dominated the line of scrim- mage the entire first half, starting with a 74-yard touchdown run by quarterback Bret Stafford. In the second quarter, Longhorn passing quarterback Todd Dodge stepped in to hit receiver Donovan Pitts with a 45-yard pass for a second Longhorn touchdown and Pitts ' first college reception. The first half scor- ing ended with fullback Darron Mor- ris ' 62-yard touchdown scramble. At the end of the day, the 5-foot-ll, 199-pound freshman had 154 yards on 1 1 carries. The line did a great job, Morris said. They made holes big enough for three guys to go through.
