The ROTC program at The University of Texas is no exception to the myriad of first class organizations on campus. From innovative curricula to a multitude of indi- vidual achievements, each military branch and organiza- tion represented a long-standing tradition of excellence. Boasting the largest freshman class since 1968, Army ROTC expanded curriculum for the adventuresome. Maj. Roger F. Poulin, associate professor of Military Science, credited classes such as marksmanship, mountaineering and conflict-simulation with renewing interest. Physical excellence was a strategic part of Army ROTC. Cadet Michael G. Dutton was awarded the second highest rating for his overall performance at summer camp at Fort Riley, Kan. Evaluation in leadership roles, field training and physical training were included in the national compe- tition. The University of Texas, along with The Citadel and the Naval Academy, has one of only three student chapters of the American Society of Naval Engineers. The professional organization was initiated by officer candidates from the Naval Enlisted Scientific Education Program and Navy Midshipmen. UT received its charter in September at the Naval Change of Command Ceremonies. The Navy also claimed the oldest ROTC drill organization in the country, the precision marching Buccaneers. Emerging from the Air Force ROTC ' s emphasis on aca- demic achievement were some exceptional individuals. Junior Bob Hendrickson was selected to Who ' s Who Among American Universities and Colleges. Last year, Leslie Palmer received the Lt. Col. Virgil Gris- som scholarship for his academic excellence and leadership skills. This year he was the recipient of the prestigious Legion of Valor Award, given only to seven ROTC mem- bers nationally. The U.S. Air Force ' s official ROTC representative for the nation was Bronwyn Lawson. a member of Angel Flight, the women ' s auxiliary for Air Force ROTC. Nomi- nated by her fellow Angel Flight members, Lawson won competition on both state and national levels for her charm, poise and composure. In fulfilling her duties as Little General she traveled over 15,000 miles, visiting places such as Phoenix. Ariz, and Washington, D.C. 394 ROTC
