Social and Behavioral Sciences The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation awarded the College of Social and Beha- vioral Sciences two-year grant to foster the field of cognitive science. Dr. Phillip Gough, chairman of the Department of Psychology and Professor Stanley Peters, chairman of Linguistics, are co-directors of the program. The departments will attempt to combine the viewpoints of the computer scientist, linguist and others to research man ' s thinking process. Dr. Michael Hall Last summer Dr. Michael Hall was elected to be a member of the oldest learned society in the United States. The Massachusetts Historical Society honored the chairman of the History Department as one of its 263 members. Dr. Phillip Gough Being chairman has both rewards and punishment. I am involved in both inti- mate and painful decisions, Psychology Chairman Dr. Phillip Gough, said. Gough served as the program chairman of the 1978 meeting of the Southwestern Psycho- logical Association. Dr. Robert Holz One of 20 scientists to brief the Skylab IV crew before they went into orbit was Dr. Robert Holz, chairman of the Geogra- phy Department. He taught at the U.S. Air Force Technical Training School, spe- cialing in photo interpretation. Dean Robert King Strengthening good departments and making other departments better gives me great personal pleasure, Dr. Robert King said. As Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, King has tried to cre- ate a student-oriented program through the creation of a career-counseling center. Dr. David Kendrick Economics Chairman, Dr. David Ken- drick is interested in electronics and has created toys for his children by altering an erector set with electronic components. Kendrick has studied the use of comput- ers in economics and how they can be pro- grammed with economic models to pre- dict policy changes and choices. Dr. Karl Schmit As chairman of the Department of Government, Dr. Karl Schmit ' s interest centers on U.S. and Latin American Rela- tions. He teaches a course covering the subject and feels that domestic relations are not as friendly as they once were between the U.S. and Panama. Dr. John Cornell Anthropology has a world view of its own, Dr. John Cornell explained. It is not confining, but has a point of view. As chairman of the Anthropology Depart- ment, Cornell said that the people work- ing within the field of anthropology con- tribute a diverse collection of opinions and interests to the study of man. Cornell is a social anthropologist. Dr. Stanley Peters Man incorporates language to talk about the real world and his environ- ment, Dr. Stanley Peters, chairman of the Linguistics Department, said. Through extended research, Peters will attempt to substantiate his theory on the meaning of man ' s natural languages in terms of words, phrases and sentences. Dr. Daniel Price Dr. Daniel Price said that his greatest achievements were serving as department chairman of two of the top 12 sociology departments in the nation. Before coming to UT, Price served as the director of the Institute of Research and Social Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Exes Come Home to Share Success The University of Texas at Austin has over 300,000 alumni. Of these exes, 35 are heads of colleges and universities, serving as presidents or chancellors. Prominent alumni include former Atty. Gen. Ramsey Clark, Dallas Cowboy Coach Tom Landry, and politicians Lloyd Benson, John Connally and Alan Shivers. This year the Texas Ex-Students ' Association selected four more Texas Exes to receive 1977 Distinguished Alumni Awards. Presiding at the ceremonies on Oct. 28, University President Lorene Rogers presented the awards to Rex G. Baker Jr., L. L. Tex Colbert, Dr. H. Frank Connally Jr., and Mrs. Eugene (Margaret Milam) McDermott in the LBJ Auditorium. President of Southwestern Group Financial Inc., Baker has received local, national and international recognition for his financial achievements. Earning his B.A. in 1941 and an L.L.B. in 1947, Baker has acted as chairman of the Development Board and president of the Dad ' s Association. A life member of the Texas Ex-Students ' Association, Baker has served on its Business Former UT sweethearts and cheerleaders come home to the Alumni Center. and Finance Committee and its Executive Council. Colbert earned his B.B.A. in 1925. Having received an L.L.B. degree from Harvard in 1929, he practiced law for four years before he joined the Chrysler Corporation, serving as president and chairman of the board. He is a founding member of the Chancellors Board and former Development Board chairman. A native of Waco, Connally has served as his hometown ' s mayor. A collector of books and art, he donated his entire pri- vate collection of Tom Lea books and paintings to the University library system. The collection included many first editions, inscribed copies and manuscripts. Connally re ceived his B.A. in 1933 and an M.D. from Galveston Medical School in 1937. A noted philanthropist, McDermott has promoted the arts and sciences as well as higher education in Texas. She and her hus- band, together with Erik Jonsson and Cecil H. Green, founded the University of Texas at Dallas. The McDermott Library hon- ors the couple ' s efforts there. Students seek information at the Texas-Exes Scholarship Open House.
