Pick and Scott Lead Swimmers to 1 9th Tough competition and illness overpowered the ' Horns several times during their 1977-78 season. When they did win however. they were way ahead of the second place team in points. Texas outscored Louisiana State University 717 to 490, easily winning the All-American Invitational. All-American swimmer Darrell Pick won the 400-yard individual medley and placed sec- ond in the 500 and 200-yard freestyle. Tony Scott grabbed first place in the men ' s one and three-meter diving. The ' Horns blasted Houston 71-42. Team members Robby Robertson. John McMahon. Scott Mactier and Duncan Hawthorn won the med- ley relay with a time of 3:31.91. Jeff Krumwiede nabbed first in the 1.000-yard freestyle. The men finished 1-1 in a triangular meet, crushing Texas A M 91-23 and losing to Stanford 40-64. Texas gave fans a sam- ple of superb diving in the meet. John Vegard and Michael Cook clinched first and second in the one-meter competition, while Scott and Fred Machell won first and second in the three-meter. Pick and Scott led the ' Horns to a 19th place finish in the NCAA Nationals in Long Beach. Calif. Pick placed fifth in the 9

Again, SMU Wins the SWC 400-yard individual medley. Scott won the SWC three- meter diving and finished eighth in the one-meter. Crushing the ' Horns 82-31 in one meet, the Mustangs won first and second in six events. While illness slowed down Pick. Krumwiede and Robertson. Pick managed to make national cutoffs in the 400-yard individual med- ley and the 500-yard freestyle. Southern Methodist University ' s two victories over the ' Horns led to coach Pat Pattersons ' decision to resign. He was replaced by Eddie Reese, the head swim coach at Auburn University. A new swim coach may not be all that the ' Horns will acquire from Auburn Univer- sity. Some of Auburn ' s swimmers who have worked with Reese for a long time may follow their winning coach. Maybe with a new coach, new swimmers and a healthier team next year, the ' Horns ' will do better. Coach Pal Patterson follows swimmers along ihe side of (he pool giving instructions.
