Losses Baffle Golf Team Working on improvement is hard enough for an athlete when he knows what he needs to improve, but when he does not know what he is doing wrong, improvement is almost impossible. During their entire season, the men ' s golf team unsuccessfully tried to find reasons why they were not winning. The ' Horns started out in top condi- tion in the fall, winning the SWC Fall Match Play Championship. The men upset the favored 1976 NCAA Cham- pion, Houston, and Rice to capture the championship. Team members Jon Chaffee, Phil Blackmar and Stewart Shockley all won their singles matches. The Chaffee-Blackmar team also won their doubles matches. After capturing the championship, the ' Horn ' s winning style disappeared. Houston got revenge against the ' Horns in the spring by capturing the SWC golf championship. Chaffee and Phil Vescovo finished at 218 to tie for fourth place in scoring, giving the ' Horns second place in the Conference. The men managed to tie with Houston for second place in the 54-hole Morris Williams Intercollegiate Invitational Golf Tournament. Texas started the tournament trailing champion Oklahoma State by one shot, but their game fell apart as play progressed. Strong performances by Blackmar, Chaffee, and Warren Aune. brother of quarterback Jon Aune, led Texas to a second place finish in the Harvey Pen- ick Intercollegiate Invitational. Windy conditions hampered the ' Horns ' per- formance. The men faltered to a disap- pointing 10th place finish in the sixth annual Pan American University Inter- national Intercollegiate Golf Tourna- ment. The team struggled to finish 1 1th in the Louisiana State Invitational. The men were discouraged after they finished 15th in the All-American Intercollegiate Tournament. Golf Coach George Hannon said, I do not know what we ' re doing wrong. If I knew what it was I ' d change it. Hopefully the ' Horns will figure out what their weak points are before they face competition next year.
