OPERATION BRAINPOWER Since 1885, the Ex-Students ' Association has sought to be a full partner in the educational process at The Univer- sity of Texas. Operation Brainpower, a project designed to attract top high school scholars, is dedicated to the Uni- versity but does not spend state funds. The University of Texas is increasingly attracting merit scholars, valedictor- ians, and upper percentile high school scholars. Yet, The University of Texas will lose much of its brainpower unless the story of educational excellence at The University of Texas is fully told. It is not only fitting, but imperative, that Texas Exes inform young scholars of the educational advantages of their University through Operation Brain- power. The purpose of Operation Brainpower, then is to seek out high school students with demonstrated ability and acquaint them with the exceptional opportunities which the University affords. 1965 PARTICIPANTS Debbie Ann Blandy William David Blunk, Jr. George David Carlock Jim R. Fletcher Mary Esther Garner Mary Tedford Griffith Jack Holland, Faculty Bobelai Malick Richard Daniel Mauldin Edgar Allen Miller Knox Dillon Nunnally Bobby Glen Odle James Benton Rylander Roy Vaughan Mary Ann Wycoff ORIENTATION The orientation program was designed to meet the needs of incoming students, especially in their adjustment to the academic life of the institution. Orientation programs had three major goals: (a) Com- municating an initial conception to the student of what the University is all about as a center of thought, learning, research; introducing the student to the intellectual set- ting; (b) giving information to the student; (c) getting information from the student. Orientation was based on the conviction that the student mind is more important than the student body. Such pro- grams were sharply focused on the basic academic concern of the University. Everything else tests, parties, welcom- ing speeches, concerts, tours, and all must be subordinated to the University ' s real reason for being. The purpose of the Texas Today and Tomorrow pro- gram sponsored by The University of Texas Development Board is to inform students today so that they will be in- terested and participating alumni tomorrow. This purpose is realized through a series of programs with student groups. Texas Today and Tomorrow is an opportunity for both faculty and students to present valid, intelligent positions and opinions on The University of Texas.
