Receiving the highest War Department honor rating possible, that of Excellent, Florida's ROTC transformed this year in conception from that of an extra-curricula activity to the vivid reality of basic officer training that it has been designed to represent. No longer has there been any thought of accepting admittance to the advanced course for the mere secur- ing ofa uniform, or of being permitted to function at Military Ball. No longer does My-303, My-40l, or even My-l02 represent an extra subject that requires more study and work than credits given. Rather, training in ROTC has served to equip those boys enrolled with a mental and physical knowledge that will work for their subsist- ence, and the nation's sur- vival, just will a concen- trated curricula of chemis- try, physics, and engineer- ing. Throughout the year, train- ing was emphasized with greater reality and thorough- ness than ever before. The artillerymen studied the howitzer, gun positions, sur- veying, and military funda- mentalsj and at the some time the Juniors were sweat- ing on the smoke puff range, the seniors were in- structing the basics. The Infantry Regiment played true-to-life war games, and studied tactics in their preparation for the bigger fight that was yet to come. With May and examina- tions came the departure of the seniors and juniors, the former, l75 in all, headed for OCS, the latter, just headed. No one denies now, nor ever will, the unending con- tributions of the University's Military Department and personnel to the complete gearing of Florida to the situation at hand.
