With the draft and the calling of the reserves taking a heavy toll of intramural participants, the quality of play was not up to standard, but the competitive war-time spirit and wish to win remained. Handicapped from the beginning of the yea r when seven managers failed to return to school, Student Director Nat Ettingoff did a wonderful job with the small group who remained and the few others who joined the intramural staff as assistants. Other aid came from members of varsity teams who generously helped officiate contests in their respective sports. Meanwhile Publicity Director Louis Safer kept the student body informed of the intramural department's functioning with a weekly column in the Alligator giving-the latest intramural dope, First sport participated in by the Fraternity league was horseshoe singles, which was won by Beta Theta Pi Sigma Alpha Epsilon took the second sport, horseshoedoubles. Phi Delta Theta then assumed the league lead by capturing three major sports in succession, swimming, boxing, and volleyball. Sigma Alpha Epsilon placed second in the first of these, Sigma Nu was runner-up in boxing, and ATO was the other entry in the volleyball finals. The tournaments in ping pong found Pi Lambda Phi's three-year single hold in this sport broken with ATO wresting the singles crown from the Pilams, and PEP gaining the doubles crown. Phi Delta Theta won its fourth major sport in basketball by defeating ATO in the finals. Track found the Phi Delts increasing their lead on first place and capturing their sixth consecu- tive major sport, followed in the scoring by SAE and ATO ATO defeated Phi Delta Theta in the semi-finals to break the Phi Delts major sport winning streak by overcoming Delta Tau Delta in the finals of the soccer tournament, which was played on the intramural calendar for the first time this year. Diamondball found Phi Delta Theta and ATO struggling desperately for the league champion- ship. Upon this sport will rest the top two positions while SAE has already clinched third place and Pi Lambda Phi has definitely captured fourth place, As this is written the tournament has just begun and it is impossible to name the winner. Interest in the Independent League ran unusually high this year and although only six teams entered the full season, the struggle for the championship provided one of the closest finishes ever witnessed in this league. CLO has been leading all of the year, but it has been followed closely by l-lillel and YMCA. As the league enters its final stage with soccer and diamondball remaining on the calendar, Cl.O still holds first place by seventy-nine points, and Hillel is leading YMCA by eighteen points. Trailing behind the top three are Floridians, Cardinals, and Crane l-lall. Volleyball, football, handball singles and tennis singles were captured by the leaders, while the second place team has taken the ping pong doubles and handball doubles tourneysi YMCA has Phi Delta Theta s Winning Volleyball Team This Team Won Football for Buckman E CLO Boxing Champs Thomas E Horseshoe Doubles Winners
