Sometimes that world out there looks pretty dismal to the University student, making final preparations to claim his legacy in society. But are the problems of his fellow man any concern of the student? Why should he get involved in the complex world he is still training for? The answer has come loud and strong from the University of Alabama student com- munity: These are our problems, too? And through community involvement, if we can do something-no matter how small-to make the world a better place to live in, then perhaps our years as a student will have been a little more worthwhile. It is with this deep conviction that the University of Alabama Student Government Association has launched its three-part program of intensified community action in and around Tuscaloosa. It all really started three years ago. Amid the controversy that so often surrounds any progressive undertaking in the Deep South, SGA joined forces with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to sponsor the Tuscaloosa Op- portunity Project, the local affiliate of Operation Heacistart. There was little fanfare or publicity, but SGA had just established itself as the leader among the nation's student associations by becoming the Hrst student government to be recognized as sponsor for such a program. The following semester, with assistance from the United States National Student Association's Tutorial Assistance Center, the long-awaited Tutorial Assistance Proj- ect CTAPD began carrying Bama students' energies into the community once again. Hundreds of students have since volunteered several hours each week to tutor po- tential high school drop-outs in Tuscaloosa's poverty areas. The work goes on now in both Druid High and Tuscaloosa Junior High School, with plans being made to extend services to the juvenile delinquent, through the local courts. The final part of SGA's Community Action Program is the newly installed Campus- Community Organizational Program CCCOPD under the direction of Newman Strawbridge. Again with assistance from the U. S. National Student Association, student volunteers spend time each afternoon organizing recreational programs in depressed areas near Tuscaloosa. And so it's with an ever-increasing awareness of present problems, coupled with a somewhat optimistic appraisal of the future that University of Alabama students, through their Student Government Association, try to do whatever they can to help make things a little better for a few more people. 75 - ' if We il .- if J-.7 X3 Qt -v .if .. . ,..h,.1 .' .: N r' ' A 'sy' ' - - -. l ,. 4. . fr as ' 1 f Af me 'f-' H52 -' U v-suaunau:uxa '-wg lag. fi V 11:2 .. , I , .. i . . 55 . .
