. As Seen from the Civilian Point of View era. And as the 149th year of Union College began, it was a sea of white caps, stippled here and there with a few tousled heads of brown, which poured forth across the campus green and into the aisles of Memorial Chapel. It seemed that the face of Union College, a composite of the faces of all her students, had become decidedly military. And it is this Military Face of Union College which we see about us today. It is a face of live hundred sturdy young men in the uniform of our country proudly singing the National Anthem in a chapel dedicated to those of Union College who gave their lives in another great war. It is the face of three companies of sailors marching lustily to breakfast as six o'clock eve.y morning. It is the face of a white clad middie strolling arm and arm with a girl through the campus. These go to make up the face of Union College- 4 july, 1943. But though the face of a college may change from day to day, the spirit of a college lives on- it can never die. Of course this spirit manifests itself in many different days, and each of us has his own ideas as to the Spirit of Union. To some of us, it is the freshman-sophomore rivalry and the nocturnal paintings of the Idol. To many, it is the weekly issue of The Concordiensis, the meals at Hale House, a bridge game in the student lounge. Others seem to Hnd the spirit living in the familiar faces which inhabit the campus. Tom, the cop standing by the mail box, the amicable face of prexy in his chapel seat, Charlie Waldron and his dog, Heidi. There are some to whom the spirit is more academic-joe Rotundo and his pipe in class, quiet evenings sur- rounded by books in the library, a Sunday afternoon organ recital. All these and more go to make up something immortal, something infinite-the Spirit of Union College. And so the face of Union College has changed considerably from what it was in years gone by. Some of us have accepted this change with a greater or lesser degree of willingness, but we have all accepted it because we know it is 21 necessity. But whether or not the face of Union College changes, whether we leave her today, tomorrow, or in four years, we will have that spirit of Union which nothing can alter. It began at Union College, 1795, and is still here at Union College-july, 1943.
