Flyers for a floor trip to Westwood and Diddy Riese, a sign-up sheet for a Frasier TV taping and posters decorating the walls announcing a blood drive were a common sight in the residence halls. For many, home is not about the place, but the people. This past year, the continued hard work and dedication of the RAs, PAs and SHAs helped to make each residence hall a little bit more like home for its residents. Aspiring staff had a long road until they actually were admitted into the program. Aspects of this process included filling out an application, writing essays, participating in one to two interviews, attending training sessions and for SHAs, taking a four-unit class in the spring. Resident Assistants acted as the authority figure for each floor. They maintained a state of normalcy, settling roommate disputes, filing work orders for defective utilities or fixtures and enforcing the rules while patrolling the hallways. With their doors open, the RAs always took the time to chat with and get to know the residents on their floors. Program Assistants were in charge of planning activities and programs for the floor, as well as advertising upcoming campus events. Responsible for knowing the first and last names, birthdays, and room number for each of the residents, the PA was the social butterfly of the floors. Student Health Advocates held office hours and participated in Outreach programs in addition to maintained informative bulletin boards and holding resident programs. SHAs also doled out free medication and provided free counseling. Angela Yu, a second year psychobiology student and SHA, expressed the overall sentiment of the Office of Residential Life staff when she said, We just want to help the residents feel comfortable to come to us if they need help.
