The spectocle continued to be a subject of debate, lingering among conversations of viewers and nonviewers alike. Photographed by Rhona Wise, EPA. February 1st was a special day for American football enthusiasts. Preceded by a week of endless forecasts by sports pundits and other know-nothings, it became increasingly clear that very little could be assumed in Super Bowl XXXVIII between the Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots. Fans could count on a low-scoring game marked with repeated turnovers, difficult defensive stops and frustrating penalties. The Patriots returned to the Super Bowl after only a year ' s hiatus via a resounding 15 game win streak comparable only to the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins. Carolina arrived in the game in the opposite manner, having lost three of their last six. The game started off uneventful with a volley of punts and minimal offensive production. Coming back from a scoreless first quarter, the Patriots capitalized on a Delhomme fumble by bringing in a touchdown. Another round of scores, including one by UCLA alum and Carolina running back Deshuan Foster, brought the game to 14-10 at the half. The halftime show involved the usual game commentary and celebrity performances, and stars included Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake. These two were involved in one of this year ' s biggest television scandals, as Janet ' s nipple - in all its glory - was set free for the world to see. Public outcry temporarily banned these pranksters from the upcoming Grammy Awards, but they managed to get pardoned in return for a public apology. This past year ' s game was unique in its competitive character, as both teams were continually thwarted from end zone aspirations. A scoreless first quarter tested the fans ' patience and innovative ads placated viewer anxiety while preventing channel surfing. This year marked the 20th anniversary of the watershed Apple ad that set the stage for influential super bowl ads. Although advertising rates for a 30-second Super Bowl spot on CBS hit a record $2.3 million, companies didn ' t see the price as the main obstacle to appearing on marketing ' s biggest stage. In appealing to 40% of the American people, companies were careful in developing an ad that would positively resonate in the minds of consumers. Of course, certain commercials could be expected, including those advocating Anheuser-Busch products and upcoming blockbusters. The game showcased standout performances on both ends of the field, though, most notable was Patriot Quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady ' s impressive 32 completions for 354 yards, three touchdowns, and his second championship ring in three years. Not bad for a 26-year old, not bad at all... D D - MB

Primar John Kerry delivers a passionate foreign policy address at Freud Playhouse. The event was sponsored by (tie Burkle Center for International Studies. Photographed by Jonathan Young, Daily Bruin. The McGovern-Fraser Reforms of 1968 fundamentally altered our Presidential election process through the implementation of primary races and or state conventions. No longer would party bosses handpick Presidential candidates; the decision making process fell squarely in the hands of an uninformed, uninterested, fickle and facetious mass public. Since the watershed reforms, candidates have been forced not only to accommodate the diverse interests of their constituencies, but to also contend with negative journalism, vengeful interest groups, numerous competitors and limited resources. The 2004 Primary contests featured the usual frenzy of American politics, and an incumbent George W. Bush sat pretty as the Democrats ripped into each other on issues of character, credibility and competence. As the former governor of Vermont, Howard Dean made quite the commotion in this primary contest. Ardently anti-war, anti-Bush, and anti-establishment, Dean was a party outsider who nonetheless quickly rose to be the Democratic frontrunner shortly before the Iowa Caucus. His innovative use of the Internet gave Dean an instrumental advantage amidst the chaotic political system, but inflammatory remarks and negative media spin would make this lead short-lived. John Edwards was thought to be the Southern Star; this North Carolina native has long supported measures aimed at helping impoverished youth struggling to get a college degree, while sympathizing with the difficult and hardly profitable toil of the rural farmer. Richard Gephardt ' s Midwestern roots and pro-labor stance, coupled with his decorated Congressional career all served to make him the blue-collar champion for the Democrats. His inability to take Iowa by storm would rapidly stall his campaign, however, and he would ultimately fall victim to insufficient resources. Joe Lieberman would be known as a straight shooter and an honest politician, two characteristics that the public sorely longed for in its elected officials. His withdrawal from the Iowa Caucus left many primary voters uncertain of his ability to lead, however, and dwindling support in New Hampshire was the deathblow to his campaign. Last but obviously not least was Massachusetts Senator John Kerry; somewhat of a party insider, Kerry had difficulties getting organized at the onset, but the Democratic Party (and its loyal supporters) soon determined that he was far more viable than Dean, and he easily clinched the Party nomination. Kerry gained notoriety as a celebrated Vietnam veteran who returned from war to inflame a massive anti-war movement. His credentials in foreign and domestic policy far supersede those of his Republican opponent, but as was learned in 2000, the American voter may care little for competence. c c 72 issues
