A Winning Combination Athletes, through their participa- tion in sports, learn and develop character and values such as . . . Attitudes. Athletes strive to learn and develop mature attitudes of unquestioning respect. Time. Varsity sports are very time- consuming obligations occurring six days a week. Hardwork. Athletes must push themselves physically and mental- ly. They give it their all, day in and day out. Leadership. Athletes are often giv- en the chance to develop leader- ship skills by directing the effort to accomplish the task at hand. Expectations. Demands are con- stantly being placed on the shoul- ders of the student athlete. Pres- sure to perform comes from pro- fessors, coaches, and teammates who require the athlete to be re- sponsible, motivated, and dedi- cated. Teamwork. Individuals with their own ideas and ways of doing things coming together as one is team unity. This is the hardest and most important opportunity to grow, both as an athlete and as a human being. Excellence. Athletes are people who set goals, work hard, and ex- cel. They strive to be the best they can be on and off the field. Success. If you put this all together (A-T-H-L-E-T-E-S) it spells success for school, team, and self- a win- ning combination!!
