OUR SPORTS YEAR 956 HIS past sports year at St. Anne's has been a great success, not only in that we 'won many of our games, but also because there was a great deal of enthusiasm shown by the girls. The Hockey team did very wcll, winning a Sweetbriar and a Fairfax Hall game, and showing a spirit of serious determination and ability to work together. With Miss Gaines as our Coach and Sally Dodson as our Captain, we had some very exciting games, both with other schools and among ourselves. Tryouts for basketball started in early December so that the season would get off to an early start. Sue Twining was chosen the Captain, and was also one of our star guards. The First Team played nine games, winning seven-two from Warrenton Country School, two from Fairfax Hall, one from Meriwether Lewis, one from Sweet- briar, one from Lane-and losing two, one to Sweetbriar and one to Lane. The Second Team played three games and won three games, two from Fairfax Hall and one from Lane. The defeat by Lane 32-24 fthe lirst game of the seasonj was a splendid incentive for the team to do the hard and consistent practice which is neces- sary to produce a winning team. Result: The score ofthe second Lane game fthe last game of the seasonj, 36-12 in favor of St. Anne's. After the basketball season had come to an end and the weather had warmed up, tennis became of major importance. Before some of the games throughout the year, we had pep rallies sponsored by the Athletic Association and led by our three able cheer leaders. During these seasons the White and Gold teams were having their contests. The teams were very evenly divided so that competition was strong. There was a great deal of school spirit, not only in the number of girls who signed up to play, but also in the number of those who came to cheer for their teams. On Held day the Golds and Whites had their final games and relay races. Mothers and daughters played volley ball while fathers and daughters had their annual softball game. Field day was the climax of the sports year. The Athletic Association gave a picnic, which was a great success and lots of fun, for the Athletic Council and the girls who had won athletic awards this year. In spite of broken fingers, sprained ankles and too many breaks, St. Anne's had good teams and great fun, thanks to each student and a wonderful coach. wi
