Varsity Football: The season should have been 6 seconds shorter. That was the time left when the Champaign place kicker put 3 points on the scoreboard and a 17-14 defeat for the Senators. The Champaign victory knocked the Senators out of first place in the Big 12, a play-off berth in The Illinois State Finals, and for all practical purposes budded the Sena- tor's season. The '76 Varsity Squad represented the best qualities of Senator Football. The Senators ran off a string of 6 wins before encountering the Maroons. This was largely and inexperienced squad, however they set their goals and achieved most, missing only one desire to win the Conference and advance to the State Play-offs. The Combining staff and underclass squad members are proud of the association we built with our graduating se- niors. lt is now our hope to achieve those goals next season which we failed to achieve in '76 F00ibaIl 1 57
