In the winter thc team defeated thc combined Carleton lsrcshman and Sophomore teams, placed second in thc Iowa lnterscholastic, and won the Madison Relay. The outdoor season was started by losing a closc meet to the Carleton Reserves. but the following Saturday the Shads made up for this by cleaning up the Hamline Relays. They captured all four relays in their class and broke one record. Carleton .luniors and Seniors defeated the Cardinal team in an exceedingly close meet at the first ot' the winter season. The closeness of this contest served to bring up the morale of' the team, for usually thc College squad was the victor by a greater margin. The next meet. with the Carleton lfreshmcn and Sophomores came out more successfully. Shattuck emerging on the long end of the score. This is thc second time that a Shad track ....r,.::A team has won out over a Carleton squad. .Xt Cedar 55 Rapids Shattuck placed second. Yl'ashington High. of Cedar Rapids, were the winners of thc meet. having a scant six point lcad. livery man who made thc trip to lzlz ,A . Cedar Rapids got one or more points in the dittercnt It ,,..,.::.' A ,, i' 'l Ai events. Rich broke the half'-mile rccoz'-Ll there, lowering H the mark to two minutes. five and three-tenths seconds. Schroeter was high point man of' the Shads with tcn and one-half points. Perhaps the most important event of the season was thc Madison Relay. This was won by Shattuck. The old record of seven minutes, six and four-fifths seconds i was brought down to seven minutes. fire and two-fifths seconds. Shields. Chrissinger. Rich, and Gratton were the members of the team. The race was not until the last five yards. Culver had secured a fifteen yard lcad by the time that Gratton. Shattuckis star half-miler. got the baton. Gratton followed his man around the track. and at the finish let loose a wonderful sprint that brought him in about thrce inches ahead. Hen wcrc entered in other events. but did not comc out as success- ful as the relay team. Culver won the tcam trophy, hav- ing won nearly all the special events. .Xgainst the older Carleton Reserves in the first outdoor meet. tlzc team made quite a creditable showing. The College men won the contest by seven points. This was made possible by their placing more firsts than the Cardinal men. The latter. however, made up for this by securing most of the seconds and thirds. The half-- milc relay was won by Shattuck. the team consisting of: Ordc. Lape, Sehroeter, and Chrissinger. The Hamline Relays were easily won by the Shads. The slowness of thc track resulted in some slow times. CAPTAIN ORDE -sr 109 la. ulrhe SHAD
