SEXTON HIGH SCHOOL Lansing, Michigan I 943 , A S l me exif Principal 1918 -1943 lt is with a deep appreciation of his loyalty, friendliness, and service that the students of the J, W. Sexton High School remember Charles E, LeFurge. .To his colleagues he was known as an able administrator, to the pupils and alumni of Central l-ligh he was at all times a true friend and a wise counselor. During his many years as principal of Central he guided the course of unknown hundreds, directing their lives into useful channels, l-lis life was dedicated to the elevation of school standards, and to this end he gave untiringly of his sound judgment and vast experience. With attention and interest glowing in his eyes, he would listen to the confidences and problems of the students and faculty, attempting at all times to formulate an agreement suitable to everyone concerned, Although he had been in poor health for many months before his death, he took great pleasure in the planning of our new building. There can be no finer memorial to lvlrs l.eFurge than the fine spirit of friendliness and cooperation which he has left with us at Sexton High. It has seen many important changes. It has seen boys seventeen and eighteen goto war, it has seen peacetime occupations transformed into wartime occupations, and of greatest interest to us at this time, it has seen the old Central High School transfer its occupants to the new J. W. Sexton High School. For the past five years, the eager hope of every class coming into Central has been that their class would have the honor of attending the new school. When this dream became a reality this year, everyone--student body and faculty-joined in the immense task of moving. Indeed, J. W. Sexton High School is the dream come true. The spacious halls, the light and colorful rooms, the well-equipped gymnasium, the modernistic library, the up-to-date science laboratories, the music rooms for every purposeiall these and many other features combine to make it one of the most modern and artistic schools in the country. The student body, looking back at the grand old traditions of Central High School, is looking forward now, not only to the upholding of these ideals and achieve- ments, but also to the establishing of even better traditions for the new J. W. Sexton High School. Page Eight 'wmrwfimll 'yI.wl.N lhrmg Smwtlw, fww, Qvlxxlwi, X,YJww1a: X Rv 11M rf MNT UWM lmlx yr Lux, D-x.rAq1u1 EDITORIAL STAFF OF THE ORACLE BOARD llfiltllfflll CMM ....,. XXX, SEXTON GYMNXXSIUM PGQL Om! Humirld Twmty ow .SN DEAN BURN HAM Dean Burnham had for many years been associated with athletics at Central High. When we moved into the new building it seemed perfectly correct to have him as our athletic director, He began at once to formulate the new program, and to work out all the many details which arose, We easily slipped from Central to Sexton, totally unaware of the skillful planning which was necessary. We, who remember his stalwart figure and helpful criticism on the football field and in the classroom, hope he will not forget athletics. our high school. DEAN BURNHAM We want to congratulate you, Mr. Burnham, on the fine iob you have done, and on your new position as assistant principal of BOARD IN CONTROL OF ATHLETICS Top Row' Carptntiir, Bovard, Robinson, Murningham First Row Blanchard, Lcfurae, McCaskiy GREGORY ROBINSON Gregory Robinson is the man we left behind, Robby, as he is known to most of us, has given up his position as athletic director to be assistant principal of the new technical high school, His red-haired, bustling figure, with his friendly smile and ready greet- ing will not meet you in the hall at Sexton After the many years of worries and troubles which go with the smooth running athletic program, we hope Robby will get his deserved rest from details, May you enpoy the peace of friendly sport Page One Hundred Twenty-two GREGORY ROBINSON ALLAN BOVARD Coach Allan Bovard has produced the best this year. After two seasons of mediocre football he developed a team which took the city championship. Not satisfied with these results he took the reins ot the basketball team in hand, and guided it to a state championship, Al is proud at our new athletic plant, and has many dreams tar its enlargement and development. With the best in equipment, and the best ot records to shoot at in coming years, we wish you a lot ot luck, Coach. 1. Q .MV, ... 1 N -WW ,,,, ..,, . ., . Besides his duties as base- ball mentor, Smyth coached the Little Reds of the i942 football season so that they might develop into the mighty Big Reds of the future seasons. Greatly liked by his charges, Dave's wavey, blonde locks and ready smile will be sorely missed around the halls and playing field. Those who know him realize the acute loss that Sexton will face with Dave's enlistment. Although the job he left is one of heavy responsibility, the coaching staff of the school has assumed it willingly and efficiently. Page One Hundred Thirty-two . SHE: HE: SHE: HE: SHE: HE: SHE: HE: SHE: A what's worth? A Duo-Therm's worth! You know -a Duo-Therm Fuel Oil Heater. Maybe I'm stupid. But what's a Duo-Therm Fuel Oil Heater got to do with War Bonds? Well, you see, my wife and I planned to buy a new Duo-Therm. But that's out for a while. Duo- Therm's a 'phantom' product now, like lots of other things that won't be made again until the war's over. Oh, you mean the people who did make Duo-Therms are doing war work now? That's right. And since we'd planned to spend this money, but can't get the Duo-Therm we wanted, we de- cided to buy War bonds instead--'extra War Bonds. Then after the war, we'll still have the money to buy our Duo- Therm with. Does that make sense? Makes plenty of sense! Say, how many other people do you suppose were planning to buy Duo-Therms this year?l' More than a hundred thousand, they they tell me ! Wow! A Duo-Ther'm's 'worth of War Bonds for each of them would cer- tainly add up to plenty of extra fight- ing dollars ! HE: You said it! And if ull the folks take- all the money they'd planned to spend for things they can't buy-and add that to the ten per cent they've pledged to put in War Bonds-f--well, it'll help get things over with a whole lot sooner ! 'kin more than a half million homes, Duo-Therm is proving its leadership in the fuel oil heating field by meeting the wartime demand for more heat from less fuel. But there will be no more new Duo-Therms made for the duration. Duo-Therm craftsmen are now work- ing full time on war production. After the war, they will again build Duo-Therm Fuel Oil Heaters-new, im- proved Duo-Therms, even better than they built in the past.
