ROBERTS QDD-8235 is the second ship named in honor of Samuel Booker Roberts, Jr., Coxswain, USNR. Samuel B. Roberts, Jr. was born in San Francisco May 12, 1921. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve on April 13, 1939 and was fatally wounded at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on September 27, 1942. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for delib- erately using his landing craft for drawing enemy gunfire away from other craft evac- uating trapped Marines. The first USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS QDE-4131 was lost off Samar, Philippine Islands, on October 25, 1944 while heroically defending an Escort Carrier Task Group engaged in a surface action with Japanese battleships and cruisers during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The present USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS was built by the Consolidated Steel Corpora- tion Shipyard, Orange, Texas. The ship was commissioned there on 20 December 1946. The ship is 390 feet long overall with an extreme breadth of 40 feet. The main battery consists of six five-inch guns in three mounts and five torpedoes. Her anti- aircraft defenses include the six five-inch guns plus six three-inch guns. She has a speed in excess of 34 knots. Her normal peacetime allowance is 13 officers and 250 men. The ROBERTS has operated in the North and South Atlantic, North and South Pacific, Mediterranean, Caribbean, North Sea, Red Sea, China Sea, Persian Gulf, and Indian Ocean. She has completed five cruises to the Mediterranean, one to South America, one cruise around the world and several visits to our immediate neighbors of Canada, Central America, and the West Indies. Her past ports of call include cities in Algeria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Denmark, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Malaya, Netherlands, Norway, Panama, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Republic of Haiti, Republic of the Philippines, Scotland, Spain, and Wales. The USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS is currently a unit of Destroyer Squadron TEN, Destroyer Flotilla TWO, Destroyer Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. The homeport is Newport, Rhode Island. The story of the ROBERTS' latest Mediterranean cruise is written and depicted on the following pages. 2 IK The Captains Message ,N , y 1-ya... Commander P.L. Murphy U.S. Navy The cruise which this book commemorates took place in the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and the Persian Gulf during the period 21 March through 15 October 1960. During this time the USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS was operating as a unit of the United States Sixth Fleet. As such, we were on the first team as a member of our country 's mobile first line of defense. The ship participated in many Fleet Operations and always performed any and all missions Destroyers are called upon to perform capably and professionally. This was our purpose and it has been fulfilled. To all hands who served aboard the USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS during this cruise, a most deserved WELL DONE. Coincidental to our operations are memories of places visited experiences ained I 8 by working together, and friendships developed throughout the cruise. A few of these are recorded on the pages of this book. Good Luck and smooth sailing to all of you. J? ' 3 Q 1 1,- . 1 f'::f1jr,g,' fp Y I M ,Q 1' r9A i' , , LT T.J. Radonlski CMC, IQYJG ILW. We weighed anchor and departed on 7 May. This time we did not head toward fleet exercises, but set our course for Port Said, Egypt, U.A.R. in order to transit the Suez Canal. The trip from Piraeus to Port Said was accomplished in three days with the ROBERTS arriving at Port Said on 9 May. While at Port Said, the Li.A.R. boycott of certain U.S. shipping was at its height and liberty was not granted for the crew. That evening, 9 May, after sunset, we joined the southbound canal convoy as the lead ship and began our transit ofthe Suez Canal and our tour of duty under the opcratiotial control ol' Clomntander, U.S. Naval Forces, Mid- dle East. The plays, presented by the National Theatre of Greece, were performed in an Illltflttlll theatre about seventeen miles from Nauplion. This Ulutltre was constructed around 1300 ILC. and is semi-circular in design witlt erfect acoustics. The ula s we saw were written b the ancient Greek la wri hts, Y P Y S Euripides and Aristophanes. After leaving Naupliou, we proceeded to Naples where we enjoyed one day's liberty before going to sea again on operations. On completion of the operation, we joined the USS lfORRliS'l' SHERMAN, USS ROYAL, and the USS KENNEDY and proceeded to Marseilles, France, where we tied up alongside the USS TIDEWATER QAD-3lj for another tender period. We arrived in Marseilles on 21 July and remained there until 4 August. This was a most pleasant visit and although we worked hard dur- ing the render period, there was ample time to enjoy liberty in Marseilles. On the morning of 4 August we departed Marseilles and after two days of exercises at sea, entered port in Barcelona, Spain, for a six day visit. We departed Barcelona on 12 August and set sail for St. Raphael, France, arriving there on 13 August. The purpose of the visit to St. Raphael was to participate in a ceremony celebrating the liberation of Southern France in 1944. We were represented in the ceremony by our Honor Guard Platoon which performed excellently. Leaving St. Raphael of 16 August, we rejoined other units of DESRON TEN and sailed to an exercise area where we participated in a gunnery shoot. Leaving that area, we joined other units of Task Group 60 and headed for Golfo di Palmas, Sardinia, where we participated in an ASW exercise prior to anchoring. We left port the same evening in order to take part in another Naval operation. Upon conclusion of the exer- cise, we entered Gibraltar to refuel and then headed for more exercises with Task Group 60. These exercises terminated on 30 August and we anchored at Fuimicino, Italy, on 31 August where we attended two days of the events in the 1960 Olympic Games. We sailed from Fuimicino early on l September to participate in a Naval re- view at Nice, France on 2 September and then anchored at Menton, France, for a ten day visit. After an enjoyable stay in Menton, the ROBERTS sailed for operations on 12 Sep- tember as a part of Task Group 60.1. The operations included a NATO exercise which was conducted between 20 and 28 September. On completion of the NATO exercise, the ROBERTS reverted to her national organization and entered Phaleron Bay, Athens, Greece, on 29 September for a four day visit. Underway again on 3 October, we sailed with DESRON TEN to Golfo di Palmas, Sardinia, arriving there the morning of 5 October. Here we were relieved of our SLXTH Fleet duties by USS MOALE. Later the same day we set our course for Rota, Spain, to refuel. After fueling on 7 October we set sail for our trip to Newport and HOME. We arrived in Newport on the 15th of Oc- tober after 7 months of deployment with the U.S. SIXTH Fleet in the Mediterranean. I9 The Trip Home . . . After departing Rota, Spain, we set our course to take us south of the Azores. As we planned to make the trip home in less than eight days, we refueled from a Fleet oiler near the Azores and increased our speed in order to arrive in Newport on 15 October. Two days outside of Newport we encountered heavy weather and were forced to de- crease our speed to avoid damaging the ship. With this decrease in speed went our hopes of possibly arriving in the States a day early. After the heavy weather subsided, however, we were able to increase speed high enough to ensure our entrance into nice, but foggy, Newport on 15 October, as scheduled. One hour after we entered port the RUi3iiR'I'S was deserted except for the duty section and the 1960 Mediterranean Cruise was but a memory. Mediterranean Cruise Statistics 1.
