Teachers outgoing, involved in school related activities ' The strongest point of the high school is the faculty, stated Mrs. Marjorie Herren. guidance counselor. No one is hard nosed or disagreeable to work with. The faculty, consisting of 103 individuals, taught a variety of courses, ranging from Interpersonal Relations to Photography. A total of 66 teachers taught subjects other than their major courses. For example, Mr. Ronald Hancock taught World Geography and supervised Cadet Teaching. Many individuals are needed to run the high school throughout the year. The cafeteria staff prepared lunch 174 times last vear, while the nurses took an average 22 temperatures a dav. Available when individual problems arose, guidance counselors and secretaries ' manned the offices during the day. MRS. LOUISE BAKER And Mrs Patricia Noland, school nurses, check a student ' s temperature, which is part of the daily routine in operating the school clinic. SCHOOL SECRETARIES — Mrs Ann Addis, Mrs. Delores Arvidson, Mrs. Mary Cantwell, Mrs. Doris Lock, Mrs. Phyllis Lustgarten, Mrs. Sherry Moore. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR Mr. Maurice Tolbert, Portage Township Attendance Officer, keeps track of truancy records for all PHS students. MEDIA CENTER staff members Mrs. Eleanor Justice. Mrs. Virginia Bateman, Mrs. Cheryl Wilson and Mrs. Sue Jongsma retain the orderliness of the library. MR. KENNETH WOODRUFF, Director of Adult Education, discusses with a potential student the adult education program offered at PHS in the evening.

Administrators strive for better conditions A Burroughs 1700 computer was purchased by Portage Township Schools to help guidance counselors prepare schedules and complete administrative tasks. It was also slated for use by students in the vocational computer class. Helping to enhance the decor of the high school, the administration allocated funds to paint B-hall and upstairs. A wild menagerie of colors was used to disguise the once dingy colored walls. For the first time students were allowed to see their grade transcripts with parent approval under the Federal Rights and Privacy Act. Those 18 and older did not need per mission. “ It’s really nice to see what my grades have been throughout high, school before a college receives them,’ commented Karen Guffin, sr. Since PUS has been battling rising enrollment, the school board has discussed building a new high school or enlarging PHS into a complex with Aylesworth. SCHOOL BOARD — Front Row: James Millington, vice president; Hubert Fitzgerald, president; Sally Olsen, member. Row 2: William English, secretary; Bruce Creasy, member. DR. GEORGE MCKAY, assistant superintendent for secondary schools, makes many decisions each day to directly affect the high school COOLING OFF after a hard day ' s work. Mr. Bob Smith ventures outdoors to oversee bus loading procedures involving approximately 1,630 students. DR. DONALD BIVENS, superintendent, of Portage Township Schools for the past two years, administers a strong school policy throughout the year. ADMINISTRATORS DISCUSS school issues together during lunch.
