The girls took many things into consicleration when nom- inations were helcl. as they wantefl a learler living toclay whom they coulcl respect and honor. liy mere accirlent. at this periocl. the newspapers harl selectecl the ten outstanding woman leaclers, ancl llelen Keller, one of the canclirlates for the house name. ap- them. The girls hail ahout Helen Keller's pearerl among heen reading wonderful relief work for the hlincl. and they were very enthusiastic when they learnetl that she was in Detroit. AX popular vote was taken. ancl llelen Keller's name was seleetecl as the most appropriate for the new house. Une of the prized possessions of this gratleroom is the signecl photo- graph of Miss Keller anrl her teacher. Bliss Sullivan, which was sent at the request of the girls after the house was named in her honor. lliith the fine co-operation of the house officers. the connnittees. and all the memhers, the house has aclvancecl rapiclly during the three years. The population has increased from two hunclrerl to over four hunclrecl, ancl the graduating class, which harl no memhers from llelen Keller House in l930, had fifty-five grarluates in this l30l Spring semester. The officers have hecome hetter organizerl. the scholar- ship has greatly improvecl. and llelen Keller is now recognizecl as an estah- lisherl gracleroom. The girls feel a part of Northwestern although Room l8fm is locatetl in the Blartinrlale lluilcling. During' the fall term Dorothy' Uls- 3 ' . zewski servefl as presirlent. and Phyllis l'asanen was electewl for the following semester. lloth girls performecl their cluties in an excellent manner. During the footlmall season. the girls of llelen Keller llouse solcl ponipons at the games. Dorothy Macllougall and May XYhyte. who took charge of the sale. macle it a financial success. The girls of llelen Keller were espe- cially husy with unusual activities. ,Ks llelen Keller's hirthclay cloes not come during the school term, the week of March 20 was selectecl as Helen Kel- ler Week to make Northwestern pu- pils Helen Keller Conscious . The girls wore hlue ancl white rihhons. ancl speeches ancl a play were given por- traying llelen Keller's life. .-X contest was helfl for a new house song. and the winner was Mary Hatlrlacl. The spirit of the girls of Helen Keller House has heen shown in the splenclicl service they render the school. ancl they will continue to strive towarcl higher attainment anrl further recog- nition in the future.
