f ,ff 5, dn . E i ? O -'W September brought changes in the school, the weather and the people. The appearance of North fly had been altered drastically. Contractors had begun excavations in July. On opening day return- ing students were surprised at the new cluttered facade of building projects. Inside, a new air of discipline and the addition of study centers suggested a tighter regime. Sophomores suffered a psychological change. They were trans- formed from mighty ninth graders at the junior high to lowly high school tenth graders. However, a typical sophomore, Jeanette Klamke QZJ, was eager and ready for anything the '69-'70 school year could offer. The office was deluged by a- wave of confused or frustrated stu- dents like Dave King and Dave Rentola Gil seeking assistance during the first week. With the beginning of cross country, a new sport at North, am- bitious Dave Lyle Gil turned out to aid the team with his obvious record-breaking speed. Lunch showed senior girls Ann Fitzmaurice, Laina Nyland, Nancy Hawkey and Mary Benning Q53 undaunted by the trials of the first days of school. Assemblies played a vital role in keeping the spirit of NK at a peak, Displaying an inspiring amount of enthusiasm and support for the school and team, students at the first pep assembly 163 set an example to be matched throughout the year. Weather changed from summer sunshine to autumn rain earlier than usual. Making the best of a wet situation, industrious students honored Music Director John Castleman by dubbing a large mud puddle near the music building Castleman Lake. C71 They pro- hibited fishing, but declared open season on Drakes. l

Seances and the supernatural overtook N, K, at the all-school play Blithe Spirit, presented to the public on the evening of November 14, The ever-increas- ing size of the audience indicated its enjoyment of the cast and play. The Noel Coward comedy was di- rected by Mr, Edgers. Completely filling one side of the bleachers, the capacity crowd at the 1969 Fall Concert was the largest N, K, has ever drawn to a performance of this type, North's talented groups presented three selections each, This event was the first of several annual concerts arranged and directed by Mr, Castleman.
