The Varsity Baseball team was loaded with many talented players this season. With the outstanding play of everyone on the team, the Trojans battled their way to Newman Smith's third district championship in baseball. The team was coached by Fred Howard, assisted by Tim Liberto, and managed by Trey Carmichael. With the outstanding play of the defense and the excellent pitching staff of Chris Gay and Kyle Duke, the team steam rolled through the regular season ar' into the playoffs. In the playoffs the sam made great strides by winning the B, District and Area cham- pionships. Not orly did the pitching and defense play great, but the hitting also came around which made for a potent offense. Robert4Bernal, Sophomore-of- the-Year last year, led the team in homers. The pitching was the main key to the Trojans' success. Smith was led by the two top pitchers in the Metroplex, Chris Gay and Kyle Duke. Both pitchers had earned run averages below 1.00. Smith received recognition of its out- standing play by being rated number one in the Metroplex and number ten in the state at the end of the season. The Trojans had many valuable and improv- ed players including Chris Gay, Kyle Duke, Robert Bernal, Joel Nelson, Jeff Woodham, Jason Sheppard, Trey Budd, Andy Jayroe, and Mike Lestarge. They also placed four members on the First Team All-District and three on the Sec- ond Team All-District. Coach Howard said, These kids know how to win, and that's what makes us a good ball teamf' With the Trojans returning a majority of their team, look for them to contend for the district championship again next year.
