As the New Jersey task group navigators, we were responsible not only for our own tracks, but for the greater part of the deployment, those of the Berkeley, Brewton, and Ingersoll as well. These efforts also included constantly monitoring ship's position to ensure New Jersey and her escorts arrived at every port and rendezvous on time. Applying their skills and a determined sense of direction, the QM gang safely guided the Battleship over 22,000 nautical miles through the North and South Pacific, Sea of Japan, Great Australian Bight, and the treacherous Makassar and Bass Straits. Each of the Australian port visits were firsts for New Jersey and each presented a unique navigational problem. Through careful planning, long hours, and real-time response under stressful conditions, the combat quartermasters played a critical role, making every commitment on time and keeping plenty of water under the keel.
