MSU Karate Club Teaches the Art ffc % $| The MSU Karate Club got its start in the fall of 1965. Classes, instructed by Chuck Carroll, a brown belt in Shotokan style, were held weekly in the Union. In 1966 the club doubled in size with the addition of the Isshinryu style, instructed by Randy Small, a brown belt. In December of 1966 th e club participated in its first tournament, the Mississippi Statewide Karate Tournament at Millsaps. The club won the second place trophy. The following year Chuck Carroll, returned to teach the Shotokan class as a black belt. Randy Small received his black belt in Isshinryu style. The club then held a small tournament with the Ole Miss Club; State lost in a sudden death match. This year the club is meeting weekly in the Activi- ties Building. The club competed in the Mississippi State-wide Karate Tournament in October and brought back five trophies. 306

Philo Demos is a Christian Democratic Leadership or- ganization sponsored by the M.S.U. YMCA. The club was founded by the Y in 1955 to provide training in lead- ership, public speaking, and parliamentary procedure for outstanding members of the freshman and sophomore class. The name Philo Demos was derived from the two Greek words meaning lovers of democracy. The club holds weekly dinner meetings with informative speakers and discussion sessions featured as programs. Christian fellow- ship is inspired among members by mutual sharing of ideas at meetings.
