Mankato State captured an unoflicial third place in the Howard Wood Relays at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The In- dians had enough ints for third place behind South Dakgta University and Colorado State but no official score was tabulated. The thinclads again captured the Be- midji Invitational. Powered lily three first places, the Indians amasse 57 points to top Northem State College of Aber- deen's second place total of 48. MSC ove wered and outscored Cus- tavus Adolplhgs, 38, and St. Paul Bethal, 14, with their point collection of 109. Mankato State's Papoose eked out a victory over the North Dakota State varsity team at Northfield in a dual meet. Freshmen and non-lettermen at- tempting to some day break into the varsity meets, compose the Papoose team. Other Papoose victories were over Pills- bury and St. Paul College. fm TRACK During the 1963 track season the In- dians won their fifteenth straight con- ference championship. The Indians won 13 of the 17 events and set six new rec- ords. The meet's individual star turned out to be Crocker, who set two records and took first in the broad jump. Of the 53 college entries in the NCAA College National Championship at Chi- cago, only 22 scored points. Mankato's seven points were scored by Rogl Meyer with his fourth place in the ammer throw and his sixth lace in the shot-put. Merle Bryan was gfth in the six mile run and Ed Roepke finished sixth in the 440-yd. hurdles.

Hurdler Ed Roepke limbers up before going to Bemidji to the NSCC meet to successfully de The varsity team ran head-on into the North Central champion, Northern Illinois, and were shock- ed 72-32. The Indians set three new Northern Illinois Field House records in defeat. For the first time in the school's histo , MSC failed to bring back a meldal from the Drake Relays. All MSC men moved from the prelimi- naries to the finals but did not place. The Indians nailed ten firsts in the dual meet with the St. Cloud Huskies winnin 78-53. MSC finishecf third behind the tied State College of Iowa and Bradley University at the Iowa Relays. Del jones set a new tourna- ment record in the pole vault with his soar of 13' WA . In their 58-22 defeat to South Dakota State the Indians did man- age to win six firsts, five second p aces and seven thirds. Dan Crocker set a new school record in the javelin, 183' 34 , in the Emporia Relays. A third place in the two mile relay, and the low- high shuttle-hurdles rounded out the scoring for the eighth place Indians. With the expansion to Highland Campus, Mankato State can boast one of the iinest hysical education com- T plexes in the llpper Midwest. Part of this complex is a new indoor track. This track is unique in that it is the only one of its kind in the Midwest and it is the only indoor track in the con- ference. The track is composed of material called Gras-tex, a combination of tar, hemp, cork, and rubber ganules. There are only a few tracks in e nation com- posed of this material. George Pfaff Cleftl, Kent Visselman, Bog Brown, Ed Roepke, Merle Bryan, an Roger Melquist try out the new fa- cilities.
