MSC's first home dual meet almost provided the tankers with the incentive they needed for upsetting the proverbial applecart, but they fell to Gustavus 42- 51. Taking firsts for MSC were Gary Sundberg in the 50-yard freestyle, lack Otterness in diving, John Brooks in the 100-yard freestyle, and the 400-yard freestyle relay teams of Sundberg, Rich Blasing, jack MacKinnon, and Brooks. River Falls State, a school which has had swimming for four years, fell prey to MSC 51-44. The second victory for the young Indians saw Sundberg again winning the 50-yard freestyle. jack Otterness teamed with Sundberg to take first and second in the diving com- petition. Iack Hallberg won the 500-yard freestyle as Bruce Horn won his first 200-yard breaststroke race after nar- rowly missing the top spot at Duluth. 3-5 RECORD The Indians next ran headlong into the eventual conference champions, Wi- nona State, and absorbed what MSC hopes will be its worst licking 13-82. Mankato could come up with only two seconds, and no first place finishes. Gary Sundberg took a second in diving while breaststroker Bruce Horn was record- ing his best time of the season in that event to take the other second. Records fell in the next two meets with Bemidji and Winona. Gustavus ....... ..., Bemidji ...........,.. Duluth Branch ........ Gustavus . . . River Falls . Winona .... Bemidji . . . Winona . . . NIC .... One of the unique features of the New Highland ool is an underwater viewing window. Freestyler Cliff Sclfnutt was caught while running through his warm-up. Schutt was one of 13 freshmen who made up the 18 member swim- ming team. Jack Ottemess proved to be MSC's top diver. He brought home the highest finish for a MSC swimmer in a conference meet-second in one Bemidii came to town determined to avenge t eir earlier loss to the Indians, but were stifled by a disqualification in the last event. MSC, therefore, tumed an otherwise two-point loss into a bril- liant 53-42 victory. In what Coach Don Robinson termed the meet of the yearf' the Indian tankers were never better, tuming ir1 record times and surprising performances. Gary Sundberg set a new varsity record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.5 and teamed with jack Otterness for second and first place finishes respectively in diving. Brooks broke another varsity record as he took first in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 57.3 while teammate Rich Carlson won his first 200-yard backstroke of the season. Winona paid a visit to Mankato but was none too kind. They again soundly licked the Indians, this time 20-75. lack Otterness picked up the only first place against Winona as he again was top man in the diving event. John Brooks broke the old varsity record in the 200- yard freestyle with a time of 2:10. Bruce Horn also set a new varsity record in the 200-yard breaststroke with 2:46, but finished third.
