Dr. John E. McCarty, Associate Professor of Graduate work at Mankato State College is designed to lead to a Master of Arts degree, to a Master of Science degree in Education, or to a greater educational competency in an area of specialization. Graduate offerings for the Master of Arts degree are intended to give additional opportunities for study and research to the student who does not intend to teach. The Master of Science procgram is designed to meet the needs of the in ividual graduate student through a balanced program of further training in a major teaching field, in general education, and in professional edu- cation. The course work required of each student is determined on the basis of his undergraduate preparation, his experience, and his ultimate goals. Administration of the program is dele- ated to the Graduate Council, whose mem- Eership includes the Academic Dean, the Graduate Division Chairman, the Professional Education Division Chairman, and one repre- sentative from each college division. Students admitted to graduate study are Chemistry, Dr. Thedore M. Nydahl, Chairman of the Division of Social Studies, Dr. Clem W. Thompson, Professor of Health and Physical Education, Dr. Morgan I. Thomas, Chainnan of the Division of Business, Mr. Elias I. Halling, Chainnan of the Division of Fine gnd Alpplied Arts. Not pictured is Dr. Vemon Beckman, Professor of peec . assigned an adviser by the chairman of the division involved. The adviser reviews the student's selection of his major Held and helps him coniirm or revise such selection on the basis of the student's background, experience, and plans. Students interested in the Master of Arts degree select major areas of specialization which are de endent upon under aduate work completed and upon potential agility to delve more deeply into specified subject mat- ter. Secondary applicants for the Master of Science degree may select specialization areas from 19 subject areasg elementary students from 4 areas. Either elementary or secondary area students may specialize in Guidance and Counseling. A minimum of 45 hours of graduate credit is required for either Master's degree. At least one-fourth of these credits must be earned in courses restricted to graduate students. Each candidate for the degree must maintain an accumulative grade-point average of 3.0 CB, or better.
